The Chiefs’ problems in left tackle don’t seem to leave them alone. After struggling all season to protect Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs brought in former Pro Bowler DJ Humphries to cool down their O-line. However, Humphries was already coming off an ACL injury he suffered last season. So there were already risks of him playing against the Chargers. But the Chiefs decided to go for it after he got medically cleared.

Well, this didn’t really go to plan last week. Pulling his hamstring, Humphries is now set to be sidelined, at least for the Browns game. As per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs downgraded DJ Humphries to out before Sunday. This news doesn’t really surprise us, considering Humphries didn’t practice all week.

They would now have to go back to struggling Wanya Morris, who was benched late against the Raiders. Although, at that time, the Chiefs went for left guard Joe Thuney, they soon relied upon Humphries in their next match-up. Mahomes, who had already been sacked 32 times before the Chargers clash, wasn’t too worried about the Chiefs left tackle issues. Opening up after the Raiders game, the Chiefs QB expressed, “I don’t know if it’s affected me too much. They’re out there and they’ve played winning football before. And so I just go about my business, go about my process and try to stay within the scheme of the offense.”

Before Humphries started against the Chargers, Mahomes also praised his new left tackle: “You see how talented he is. The physical gifts are there.” Well, it doesn’t look like Humphries isn’t physical enough to take on the gridiron again for a few weeks. As for Mahomes, he needs to stay clear of the Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, who is looking for his 100th career sack.

Patrick Mahomes prepares to face a determined Myles Garrett

Myles Garrett, as for now, stands at 99.5 sacks in his NFL career. And if he does get his 100th sack against the Chiefs, he would be the youngest player ever to achieve that feat. Well, seeing Mahomes struggling through the Chiefs leaky O-line, Garrett might just get his 100th sack on none other than Mahomes. As for Mahomes, he calls it a part of football that they need to overcome, “It’s a part of football. We’ve played a lot of defenses this year. That’s the one bad thing about when you win the Super Bowl. You play the best schedule and we’ve played a lot of good defensive ends and defensive linemen.”

What’s your perspective on:

Can the Chiefs overcome their left tackle woes, or is Mahomes destined for more sacks this season?

Have an interesting take?

This season, Mahomes has gone down 35 times within just 13 games. Last season, including the playoffs, Mahomes was sacked only 28 times. In order to solve their problem, the Chiefs have gone with three different players at left tackle. But none of them has so far worked. Even DJ Humphries, who is now injured, didn’t play well against the Chargers. He gave up eight pressures over 40 pass-blocking attempts. Now comes Myles Garrett, looking for his 100th sack on Sunday.

Although the Browns have massively struggled this season, Garrett has 11 sacks to his name. So it remains to be seen whether the Chiefs O-line can keep Myles Garrett at bay. If not, then Mahomes could find himself handing Garrett a place in the NFL record books on Sunday.
