In episode 1 of “Great Expectations” in the Receiver film, George Kittle enters the scene while signing autographs on his 49ers jerseys for fans. This setup took place in September last year, and Kittle introduced himself with: “I’m George. I know you think the show’s about just receivers and all.” He then disclosed the reason why he is in the documentary, despite being a tight end. Kittle expressed, “But being a tight end, I get to do everything.”
He continued, “I do catch passes. I do score touchdowns. I gotta block people. Pass protect people.” So, yes, it is this multi-faceted role that allows Kittle to be tagged as a position holder in the Receiver series as well.
The principal role of wide receivers on the gridiron is to catch forward passes from the quarterback as well as defend them against the opponent’s safeties and cornerbacks. Similarly, the TEs protect their quarterbacks by blocking and even catching passes from them like a typical all-rounder. Hence, tight ends are arguably considered as the receivers of the offense.
Besides dwelling on the curious question of the fans, Kittle also requested them in the episode. He hoped, “When you watch my tape, I want you to say, “Wow, this guy gives it his all on every single play.”” And yes, the receivers do deliver their best, as portrayed in this Netflix Series. Their dedication and commitment in their gameplay will undoubtedly make fans realize the true “wow” factor, via the series. And Peyton Manning already did this from his side.
