“Self-satisfaction, above everything.” Those words seem to define David Montgomery’s mindset. Why are we saying it? Well, during the Lions’ loss to the Bills in week 15, the star RB was dealt a rough hand—a potential season-ending MCL tear. Now, Head coach Dan Campbell didn’t sugarcoat it: “We’re going to miss him.” But you know Montgomery isn’t one to throw in the towel that easily.
Here’s the thing: Montgomery isn’t buying the first diagnosis. Not yet, anyway. While most players might already be gearing up for rehab, Montgomery is gearing up for answers. “David’s getting another opinion,” Campbell shared, sounding more like a hopeful teammate than a head coach. “That’s why we haven’t put him on IR.”

So, what’s the story? David Montgomery initially left the field with a knee issue in the second quarter. Jahmyr Gibbs took over, but Montgomery was back after halftime—until the knee sidelined him again.
Though his ground game was stifled (five carries for just 4 yards), he still chipped in with four catches for 31 yards. This guy’s more than just a grinder; he’s half of the NFL’s most dynamic backfield duo this season.
And in this bruised period for Dan Campbell & Co. (one injury after another) who do you think has been able to keep the running game ticking? Yeah, this duo.

David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs: the legs of the Lions
David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs have been a nightmare for defenses, combining power and finesse in a perfect “thunder-and-lightning” act. And no, that’s not an exaggeration. It’s anything but that. Sure, Gibbs edges Montgomery in efficiency (5.6 yards per carry vs. 4.2), but the balance they bring has kept the Lions’ offense relentless all season.
With 186 carries for Gibbs and 185 for Montgomery, they’ve worn down opponents like a 4th-quarter blitz. Well, if you watched the Bills game, you’d have witnessed them run like every yard would be their last. (With Montgomery doubtful, we know how that sounds. But we hope he does get fit because that is the last injury Detroit wants to hear about).

Now, though, things get tricky. Injuries are piling up for Detroit, especially on defense. Losing Montgomery would leave a big hole in an offense that’s been the backbone of a season some are calling the Lions’ best ever. Can the team’s “next man up” mentality hold, or will this derail their playoff dreams? If anyone can turn a setback into a comeback, it’s Montgomery.
