Did Mike Westhoff make the right call prioritizing health over coaching the Broncos?

Mike Westhoff is going through an uphill battle right now! Denver Broncos assistant head coach recently shocked everyone with his latest decision. Allegedly, Mike, 76, has resigned from the job due to potential health issues.

Through a Twitter post, Pro Football Talk confirmed the same. “Citing health issue, Broncos assistant head coach Mike Westhoff steps down,” they mentioned in their post caption.

After suffering vision problems last week, the NFL coach had tests on Monday, including an MRI. Seemingly, he took the toughest decision after having a conversation with doctors regarding his health issues. However, it was not easy for him to leave like this. “It’s not easy to make this decision, but this was a wake-up call that I needed to put my health first,” Westhoff stated.

Not only this but at this moment, an emotional Mike also expressed his deep regards and gratitude to the team. “I’m grateful to Sean for giving me the opportunity to contribute to a first-class organization and wish the Broncos the very best,” he added. Besides this, he also admired the Broncos’ winning culture. He further demonstrated that with its solid foundation and winning mentality, this team is definitely moving in the right direction.

It is clear he left the team in a positive position. During an excellent season for the Broncos’ special teams, he steps down from his assistant head coach role. Under his leadership, the Broncos improved their performance.

Seemingly, with his true guidance to the team, Mike played a vital role in enhancing Denver’s special team’s performance. After being hired by Broncos head coach Sean Payton in 2023, he has made significant contributions to make the well-positioned team. The team’s current positioning in the NFL is enough to showcase Westhoff’s impactful leadership.

Apparently, the Broncos are presently in seventh place in the punt return average with 12.3. While it ranks 12th in kick return average with 28.1 through a total of 10 games in 2024. Not only this, but under his mentorship, the Broncos also showcased its dominance last season. Their 2023 NFL season ranking was truly impressive, as they ranked first in the punt return average of 16.3.

Thus, it is safe to say that, under his excellent leadership, the Broncos’ special teams have proven efficient and resilient. Mike has been an NFL coach for 33 years since joining the NFL as an assistant coach with the Indianapolis Colts in 1982. Although Westhoff’s exit from the NFL poses concerns, the Broncos now need to look for an adequate replacement to preserve or strengthen their performance.
