The Buffalo Bills broke up the connection between Josh Allen and some of his teammates. After the free agents, including Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, and Tre’Davious White’s release, the franchise has put an end to the Stefon Diggs debate.
The debate about whether Allen became a superstar because of Diggs joining the Bills has been settled by the team’s general manager, Brandon Beane. He made it clear that Allen’s success is not solely because of Diggs. As he hinted that Allen’s achievements are his own, implying that Diggs played a supporting role. But the question arises even though Diggs was a supporter of the quarterback, why Beane has been making such decisions regarding their cornerstones, and that too except Josh Allen?

In a recent episode of The Rich Eisen Show, the host was joined by Sports Illustrated’s MMQB Senior Reporter Albert Breer to talk about the real reasons why Bills GM Brandon Beane is eliminating his previous roster, and believing in the quarterback, Josh Allen. He emphasized, “I think the bigger thing is that, I would never say the window of opportunity is closed or the window of Championship opportunity is closed on a team that’s got a quarterback like Josh Allen. But I think with each of these quarterbacks you have like little eras, within their bigger era, that while the team’s championship window with QB Allen is not closed, they are transitioning into a new phase.”
Breer observed that many key players on the Bills roster, such as Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, Tre’Davious White, and Mitch Morse, were either ageing or dealing with injury issues. As a result, the Bills management has chosen to offload some of these players to rebuild the team. The reporter also drew a comparison to the Rams, who underwent a similar process last year by trading away key players like Jalen Ramsey and Leonard Floyd.
The Rams made a conscious decision to undergo a reset in one go rather than spreading it out over several years. Similarly, the Bills are now in a full reset year, where they need to rely on excellent coaching, quarterbacking, and drafting to navigate through this transition period.
Overall, Breer suggested that while the Bills may face challenges in the short term, they have the potential to emerge stronger if they make the right decisions and investments in coaching, quarterback play, and player acquisition through the draft.
However, despite looking at a potential good future, the separation of Allen & Diggs might impact the games for the Bills.
What changes can the Bills see now?
In the season before Stefon Diggs joined the Bills, Josh Allen had already shown promise. With John Brown and Cole Beasley as his prime targets, Allen led the Bills to a 10-6 record and a playoff spot. He threw for over 3000 yards and rushed for over 500 yards, showcasing his dual-threat abilities. Meanwhile, Diggs had a successful season with the Vikings, averaging nearly 18 yards per catch and surpassing 1,100 receiving yards.

When Diggs joined the Bills in 2020, both his and Allen’s performances improved. However, it’s unfair to credit one player for the other’s success. They both contributed to each other’s growth, forming a mutually beneficial partnership. Despite Diggs’ declining performance in the latter part of the 2023 season, Allen continued to excel, leading the Bills to a division title.
