The New York Jets front office has had enough of their teams’ struggles this season. After their third loss this season in London, they have decided to pull the plug on head coach Robert Saleh, whose 3-year stint has seemingly come to an end. This makes us question who would be the one to replace Saleh on the Jets hot seat. While the search for a new head coach goes underway in New York, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich takes over as the interim head coach.
Seeing his sudden departure from the Jets, it seems like owner Woody Johnson wasn’t exactly happy with his teams’ performances this season. Going into the regular season, the Jets had huge hopes, considering the return of four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. However, he and Saleh haven’t been able to click together, which might have led to Johnson firing Saleh after just five weeks into the season.

But who can replace Saleh mid-season to take up the Jets hot seat? Well, there are a few candidates that the Jets could bring to turn things around in New York. The most likely candidate could be legendary head coach Bill Belichick, who is out of work since leaving the Patriots last season. He remains the strongest option, considering the record number of Super Bowls he holds in the NFL. His six Lombardi’s with the Patriots as head coach and previous tenure as assistant head coach for the Jets could prompt Johnson into hiring Belichick.
If not, there is also the option of former Seahawks coach Pete Caroll, who hasn’t taken a new role since leaving the Seahawks in 2023. It would be an interesting choice, considering he also had a previous stint as head coach for the Jets in 1994. But it wasn’t really successful.
Although we have yet to see an approach made towards Belichick and Caroll, Johnson could be urged by the fans to bring back former head coach Rex Ryan. Some of them have already started to express their views on the same, “BRING BACK REX RYAN,” while others chimed in with, “BB HC Rex Ryan DC Gruden OC @woodyjohnson4 Make it happen.” While we wait for confirmation on who gets the chance to replace Saleh. Let’s take a look at what got him fired in the first place.

Robert Saleh showed the door amid a poor start to the season
It was yet another disappointing start to the season under Saleh’s watch in New York. Although the Jets did win two games, those weren’t enough to keep him in charge of the green and white. Firing Saleh means he ends his Jets tenure with a record of 20-36. This wasn’t something that the Jets fans would have hoped during his three seasons at Florham Park. Even Jets owner Woody Johnson spoke about the Jets needing to improve, pointing out Saleh’s mismanagement, “We have all this talent, and we have to deploy talent properly. This is it. This is the time to go. We’ve got to produce this year.”
With the fear of missing out on the playoffs for a 14th consecutive season, Johnson decided to break his 25-year hoodoo. This was the first time he decided to fire a head coach mid-season, which shows he had enough of Saleh in New York. Well, Robert didn’t also enjoy a great time managing the QBs. Over his three seasons, he started six different QBs: Zach Wilson, Mike White, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, Trevor Siemian and Tim Boyle.
