The Super Bowl showdown may prompt fans to speculate intensely, but the humble coin toss has a following of its own. The simple aspect of the event sets the tone for the rest of the evening and, sometimes, beyond. It has become crucial for teams to gain an advantage at the game’s beginning.

Who will call the toss this season?
During regular-season games, the visiting teams get to call the coin toss. However, the Super Bowl, being a common ground for both teams, nullifies the practice. Hence, the home team title alternates between AFC and NFC every year. In doing so, the even-number responsibility has fallen upon the AFC team. The Kansas City Chiefs thus called the toss last year, leaving the responsibility to the San Francisco 49ers (NFC) for the 2024 event.

Upon winning the toss, the teams choose to either receive the ball or select which side they wish to start in the big game. Last year, the Chiefs won the toss with tails and decided to receive the ball. This resulted in a 38-35 win against the Eagles. With that, the Chiefs also became the first team since the Seattle Seahawks in 2014 to win both the coin toss and the game. While it may seem meager, the statistics of coin toss have held significance among staunch followers, having recorded every game’s result so far. Here’s how they read.

Super Bowl coin toss in numbers
One of the reasons the Super Bowl coin toss garners the attention of millions is that spectators get to place bets. While science may offer a 50-50 result, that hasn’t always stayed true by the production. So far, tails have won the toss in 55% of all 57 events. Up close, seven of the last 10 games. Moreover, away from the betting, a coin toss win hasn’t always resulted in a team’s victory. From 55 of the past Super Bowls, teams that have won the coin toss have secured the championships 26 times (47%) and lost 29 times (53%).
