Who inspired Kiya Tomlin to fashion designing?
From a young age, Kiya Tomlin showed an interest in creating her own clothing designs. As a child she was little. It was because of this that her mother was finding it challenging to obtain clothes that fit Kiya properly. Kiya Tomlin made the decision to start creating her own in order to fit and look good. She received the sewing machine she had requested for Christmas.
She started using it to make cushions, ducks, and gowns when she was eleven years old. Mrs. Tomlin spent a large portion of her early years designing, stitching, and creating garments. In addition to making clothes for herself, she would also make prom dresses for friends and babies.
After high school, Kiya Tomlin’s sewing machine would come in handy. She brought it to college with her and used it to make outfits for both herself and her gymnastics club. She also created a pregnancy-related dress for one of her instructors.
She attended a gymnastics camp in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1982 while she was a child. Unbeknownst to Kiya Tomlin, one of her gymnastics campmates had a well-known mother, and Kiya was influenced by this mother’s initial camp visit to pursue a career in design. “The entire scene still replays like a slow-motion dream to me … the vision of elegance, drape of the fabric, and the ease of her sitting with us defines my brand concept to this day,” Kiya says on her website.

“When she saw us, she came down to the grass level and sat directly on the grass with us — in all that white silk chiffon. I immediately recognized that it was Diana Ross.” Kiya Winston realized then that her destiny would be to create this style for anyone or everyone simply by observing the elegance of Diana Ross’s attire and how she lived it while sitting in front of her.
In 2014, her perseverance paid off as she unveiled her revamped tracksuit collection, “Uptown Sweat.” Kiya targeted women over thirty with her “Uptown Sweat” makeover. Actually, a lot of the styles available now are intended for women who are older than this. But the fact that every item in her apparel line is manufactured in the United States of America is what makes it so unique.
The designs of Kiya Tomlin were receiving the recognition they rightfully deserved. She was starting to establish herself on social media, and her website was starting to steadily sell her goods. In lieu of only selling online, Kiya built her own store, Kiya Tomlin Work/Shop, in Etna, Pennsylvania, in 2018 after deciding it was time to grow.

“In my heart I felt if I could design, manufacture and sell in one place, that would be a dream,” Kiya says. “That seemed like success.” Kiya owned a smaller store in East Liberty prior to opening her Etna facility, but the problem she was facing was that she was selling her products there even though they were made somewhere else.
Kiya Winston Tomlin, a driven and successful fashion designer and businesswoman, initially turned down HBO’s offer to be in a documentary because she didn’t want it to focus on her husband’s coaching career or be a reality show. After seeing what the series was really about—celebrating the lives of women who support their husbands while also shining in their own careers—she decided to participate. Kiya takes pride in being Mike Tomlin’s wife and a mother of three, but she’s equally proud of building a successful career of her own.
