Would Andre Johnson have been as successful without his mother's unwavering support?

Karen Johnson: the mother behind the man. Karen was more than Andre Johnson’s mom—she was his protector, his coach, and his biggest cheerleader.

From the moment Andre was a flicker in her womb, Karen knew he was meant for great stuff. Karen’s younger brother, Andre Melton, shared the same conviction, claiming the unborn kid as his own. “I would say, ‘that’s my baby. That’s my son’,” Melton said. So, when the baby boy finally arrived, they named him Andre too. Andre Lamont Johnson was a wide receiver for 14 seasons, primarily with the Texans

Life wasn’t a walk in the park for Johnson’s mom. She was a single parent, juggling college at Tennessee State and raising a kid. Karen opened up about the tough times, sharing her steely resolve: “It all started when Andre was an infant. It’s been like that from Day 1,” she quipped. The Texans’ ex-WR’s mom worked every job from the Army Reserve to the local school board, all while keeping her little family afloat. Andre Johnson’s biological dad was an absentee father, but his uncle Melton hovered as a father figure.

Johnson’s mom was born and raised in Miami. Before the growing receiver made it to Miami Senior, Karen boldly changed her son’s life. Johnson was a bright kid, but he was also a typical teenager. He started hanging with the wrong crowd, and as a mother, Karen knew she had to do something. So, she made a bold move and moved to a new neighborhood. “I just decided to transfer him to where he knew no one and no one knew him,” Karen said. “And that settled that.”

Football was Johnson’s escape, but even there, Karen pushed him like there was no tomorrow. When he started slacking in school, she laid down the law. But she also dreamed big for him. One night, out of the blue, she told Johnson he was going to the University of Miami to win a national championship. Sounds crazy, no? But that kinda belief is powerful stuff.
