What is common between the two cornerbacks, Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland? Both being good with ball-hawking abilities? Well, yes, but there is another common thing that developed them into better players: their former coach, Joe Whitt Jr.
Joe, who’s currently a defensive coordinator of the Commanders, is having a blast this season. They’ve finished the regular season 12-5 record, their best since 1991. Who would’ve thought that a player who directly turned to coaching after his college career would get this far? When you’re career is like this, fans get curious about your personal life. But Joe likes to keep it lowkey.

Joe is married to Erica. Together, they’ve three children: Joseph, Ava, and Zoe. When asked about his family bond, he said in an interview, “I really don’t have any hobbies. My kids are my hobbies.” You wonder why would Joe say no hobbies? Maybe his own experience has the answer.
Joe then explained, “You talked about my dad being a football coach, and he was away. So, I wanted to make sure that my kids were my hobby. So, it’s my family, it’s football, and it’s really just my faith in God. And other than that, I’m a simple guy. I’m a country boy from Alabama. That’s all I am.” His kids are lucky to have him! But his luck seems to have doubled as he is eyeing promotion.

Joe Whitt Jr. in contention for Jets’ HC role in 2025
It is no secret that the New York Jets have interviewed Joe for the head coach. His interview happened quite dramatically just after his game against the Lions. His team won against the Lions with 45-31. The Jets are now looking at his defensive back expertise. And he has a good case, his unit finished at 3rd rank in passing yards allowed per game with 189.5 yards. Also, they finished 5th in sacks per pass attempt with 8.67. As we’re talking about this, we can’t forget to mention the game against Tampa Bay. The Commanders’ defense was the pioneer in their 23-20 win over Buccaneers in the Wild Card Weekend.

Even if the Jets are looking at are looking a diverse or long career, Joe has this covered. Whitt has been an assistant coach in the NFL since 2007. He has teams like the Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns, and Dallas Cowboys in his resume. This experience will help the Jets to get out of the mess. They had fired Robert Saleh after just 5 games into the 2024 season. Jeff Ulbrich had to take the role of interim coach. The next regular head coach is expected to be announced next week. If all goes well, then we might see Joe as the new head coach of commanders next week.
