Does Marie Schoen's support make Joe Schoen a better GM for the Giants? What do you think?

HBO’s documentary, Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants, hit the platform on July 2. And central to the narrative is the key figure, the General Manager of the New York Giants, Joe Schoen. The 45-year-old, who joined the Giants on January 21, 2022, has had a vibrant career, initiating it way back in 2001. While his impressive records are all over the internet, it is about time we unveil the biggest support system of his journey – his wife, Marie Schoen.

Joe and Marie Schoen have been married for just under 20 years now. This was revealed by the senior vice president last year when he highlighted the supportive nature of his wife to Go Long in this demanding journey of the NFL. “I tell my wife, we’ve only been married about nine years because the other nine years, I was in a Marriott. It’s crazy, isn’t it?”

Before meeting Joe, though, Marie had been a student at UNC Greensboro and, subsequently, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She received her degree in Communications in 2001, post which she immediately joined the Bank of American Investment Services in the mutual funds department.

While she was an investment specialist for 8 months, July 2002 saw her take up a new role as the Renewal Specialist at the Rogers Benefit Group. In her noticeable loyalty front, to this day, Marie continues to work with her third company, Northwestern Benefits, as the Director of Sales, boasting 20 years of experience.

Alongside handling her own career, Marie has a fairly huge part to play in making sure the GM of the New York team also gets to do his best at his workplace. Indicating the elemental role of his family, Joe once highlighted, “I would like to thank my family: my wife Marie, daughter Sydney, son Carson, and Harper Grace, my three-year-old. I appreciate all the sacrifices you guys have made over the years in allowing me to chase my dream.

However, credit is not just due on one end of the spectrum. Even Marie had words of praise for her husband for taking time out of his demanding schedule to spend time with the family. “On days they’re home early, every minute he has at home, he is making quality time with our family, he FaceTimes me a thousand times a day, people laugh about it, but it’s our time together. It pours love into our marriage. He makes that time. As much as he’s successful at work, that’s the type of person he is in all aspects of life.”

Apart from the shared support the couple displays, Marie has also extended a hand of companionship to the partners and spouses of the newly joined players of the team. She, alongside Beth Daboll, the wife of Brian Daboll, has created an environment of reinforcement and accommodation for the young women just entering the spectrum of the NFL.

With years of experience in the league, Marie has taken up the role of helping the wives of new Giants members adjust to New Rutherford. “Really, it’s just trying to know the whole picture and make sure everybody feels comfortable because the guys get here and immediately have to go in and start practicing,” Schoen remarked.

She elaborated on her reason behind the initiative of keeping a welcoming environment available for all. “Their wife or significant other is left [thinking], ‘Right, okay, I’ll get there when I get there.’ You don’t know anyone and at times they are younger so we try to – when people have come this season – embrace them and put them with people who live near them or are like-minded in that same group or have kids the same age so they immediately feel welcome. It can put a lot of stress on players or other significant others when the wife or significant other feels lonely all day.”

To address this issue of feeling alone and to develop a sense of community outlook as well, Schoen and Dabool even initiated community activities like Bible studies “to offer a lot of different things in the hope somebody can come to one of the things.” Her community service roles have helped make immense changes in society. There are multiple instances wherein she has collaboratively worked for the same.

Marie and Beth co-hosted an event called “Sleep Out: Women Unite” to support Covenant House New Jersey (CHNJ). They started this initiative to raise awareness and funds to help homeless youth who become victims of human trafficking. The proceeds contribute to homeless youth receiving meals, new sheets, computers, and healthcare.

Previously, when Joe was with the Buffalo Bills, Marie was also a prominent member of the Buffalo Bills Women’s Association. As a part of this group, she dedicated herself to charitable work and community service. In one instance, she participated in cooking meals and delivering homemade desserts to Kevin Guest House, which was in downtown Buffalo. All of these roles demonstrate her thorough involvement in community service and how her support has been an integral part of Joe’s journey in the competitive league.
