When it comes to NFL families, Heather Neel does stand out. Married to Saints quarterback Derek Carr since 2012, Heather is a lot more than just a ‘supportive spouse.’

But of course! Heather has been there by Derek’s side through thick and thin. Or, one may say, through every touchdown and interception. Making their love story as enduring as Carr’s NFL career. Let’s dive deep into the life of the woman behind the Saints QB.

Who is Heather Neel?

Heather Neel wasn’t always in the football spotlight. Her story began far from the stadiums, at a Fresno steakhouse, where she worked as a waitress. Talk about humble beginnings! And it’s in the steakhouse that she met Derek, who was then playing for Fresno State. His cheesy pickup line, asking why she only wore one earring, was enough to spark a romance. “That’s your pickup line?” she teased. Yet, it did work. And Derek knew she was just the girl. But where is she from?

Heather was born in Northern California and went to Fresno Christian High School. She later attended Fresno State University. Her romance with Derek Carr led to marriage in 2012, while they were both still in college. Sure were in a hurry, the two (giggles). Over the past 12 years, Heather has shared glimpses of their lives. From celebrating their anniversaries to family milestones.

For their 10th anniversary in June 2022, she posted, “10 years of being married to my best friend! You are more than I could’ve ever dreamed or imagined.” They say that for any relationship to prosper, you need them to be friends first. And the Heather-Derek duo is surely proving it right. On the other hand, Heather is a mom too.

The couple has four children. Dallas, Deker, Deakon, and Brooklyn. Dallas, the eldest of the lot, had a tough start to his journey. Undergoing multiple surgeries for intestinal malrotation. Derek reflects on it as a really tough period in their lives. “There was a lot of emotion going through all of that and I get choked up talking about it now, but he’s doing great now and he has no problems.” Adversity brings people together. And this adverse experience only made the bond between the two stronger.

She’s known for her philanthropic efforts too. From organizing team luncheons to supporting charitable causes, she does it all. Her Instagram reveals a passion for community and faith, which she shares with Derek. This commitment defines her contributions, a support that goes deeper than cheering in the stands.

How has Heather Neel been a strong supporter of her husband, Derek Carr?

As Derek navigates the pressures of the NFL, Heather remains his unwavering support system. She’s there at every step, from the Raiders games to his new chapter with the Saints. When Derek faced backlash during the Raiders’ playoff misses, Heather’s belief in him didn’t waver.

“I’m going to be a husband and a father and a brother a lot longer than I’m going to be a quarterback. Someday they’re going to take my jersey away.,” Derek once said, reflecting on his career and the importance of family in one’s life. Heather’s devotion was clear when she rallied behind Derek’s transition to New Orleans.

Moving with four kids was no small feat, but Heather embraced the challenge. Her Instagram posts show her excitement about the Saints’ community as she continues to support Derek’s faith-driven leadership. On the other hand, Heather’s game-day presence has also caught eyeballs.
