Did Allen Davis' bold moves truly shape the NFL, or is his legacy overstated?

Carol Davis exemplifies how a woman can exert influence over almost anything. Everyone is aware of her participation in controlling the Las Vegas Raiders, but the struggles she made with Allen Davis are not widely known.

They are the ones who established a solid foundation for an NFL team, which is now valued at more than $6.2 billion. But who exactly was Al Davis?

It is natural to imagine that Carol Davis’ spouse would have been as passionate as she is. You are correct if you assumed this about the Late Allen Davis, one of the most iconic figures in NFL history. Many of you may have heard of his name and achievements, but let’s take a closer look at them today.

The man initially was the Raiders’ head coach and general manager, after the while he became the American Football League’s commissioner. He was also the major owner and president of the Oakland Raiders’ general partnership (Now known as Las Vegas Raiders). Now that’s what you call a memorable career. But wait, it’s not finished. After being in all of these positions, he’s made some significant achievements, too.

In addition to all the positions he managed, the man was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1992 as a team and league administrator. After that, Allen Davis led the Raiders to 29 winning seasons and three Super Bowl appearances. This was a legendary career, but unfortunately he passed away in 2011.

The man accomplished all of this and had a famous career, but he also did the unthinkable. This endeavor eventually earned him a place in the history books. So, what was it?

What was Allen Davis famous for?

New NFL fans will be unaware of this, but there was another football organization in the 1960s and 1970s. It was the NFL’s rival company and was called the American Football League (AFL). These firms eventually amalgamated, and Allen Davis is still held accountable for it. But how does a coach pull off such an impressive feat?

Actually, in April 1966, while Davis was the Raiders’ head coach and general manager, he received a life-changing opportunity. The AFL offered him the position of commissioner of the league and management of its operations. This was a big deal for him, since accepting the offer would signal the end of his coaching career.

The man followed his instincts and accepted the offer. Later, he was able to settle the problems between the NFL and the AFL, bringing an end to their six-year rivalry in such a way that the two corporations finally merged in 1970.

Because of his efforts, AFL President and Buffalo Bills Owner Ralph Wilson referred to him as “a coaching genius and astute administrator.” When he died, his wife and son, Carol and Mark Davis, gained control of the LV Raiders.
