Corum asked Shipp for her hand on June 30, and popped the question which she had wanted to hear for a long time: “Will you marry me?” Their Instagram profiles revealed their engagement photos, wherein the professional athlete orchestrated a romantic proposal on a rooftop, with MARRY ME lights glowing in the background. Corum can be seen effortlessly lifting Shipp in his arms under the moonlight on a heart-shaped made of rose petals. Another photo shows the couple celebrating with champagne, and displaying Shipp’s new engagement ring given by her partner.
However, being Corum’s fiancée is not the only identity of Shipp. She is much more than that!
Makiah Shipp has done it all on her own!
By profession, Makiah Shipp is reportedly an award-winning author, public speaker, civic engagement activist, as well as social justice and youth advocate. Shipp is an inspiring young leader whose story began in Ann Arbor, where, at just 18, she made a significant mark by joining the Ann Arbor Independent Community Police Oversight Commission. By 20, she had already achieved bestseller status with her book, “Makiah’s Show and Tell.” This special book empowers young black girls through the power of storytelling and celebrates the cultural significance of black hair. However, that’s not all for the young star. Growing up in Detroit, Shipp excelled in school, becoming class president at Detroit Edison Public School Academy. She was deeply involved with the Rhonda Walker Foundation and Midnight Golf, both of which aim to empower young minds.

But a pivotal moment came in 2019. She landed a research internship at the University of Michigan’s School of Education, leading to a scholarship at the esteemed university. Her dedication to social solutions shone brightly in 2022 when she contributed to the Crafting Democratic Futures Project at the University of Michigan Center for Social Solutions. And this year, she also met her love, Blake Corum. Shipp’s insights on BIPOC Gen-Z voters during the 2020 presidential election caught NBC’s attention, showcasing her influence. And since then her voice has been amplified on platforms like “Black Girl Speak.” She’s also been an active member of the “Black Student Union, Spectrum journal, and LEAD Advisory Board.”
Anticipating her graduation in 2024, with a degree in public policy analysis, Makiah is set to become the first college graduate in her family. And all the credit goes to her mother. Raised by her resilient single handicapped mother, Mauretta Andrews, Shipp overcame numerous challenges on her own. Her mother’s strength inspired her determination to uplift her family and others facing similar struggles. More power to you, Makiah!
