What a game we witnessed as the San Francisco 49ers traded blows with the Green Bay Packers at home. Despite playing his best, Jordan Love couldn’t manage the squeeze the game and threw a pick with just a couple of seconds left on the clock. But it’s not just Love who cost the Packers the game. Most of it had to do with the rookie Anders Carlson.

Carlson missed a field goal for 3 points and that one kick ended up costing the Packers their chance at Lombardi. Matt LaFleur said, “Every time he goes out there, I just pray.”, which turned out to be a genuine concern after tonight. But who is Anders Carlson? Let’s dive deep into the rookie’s career.

In the divisional game against the Niners, he completed 2-3 of his kicks, and the one that he didn’t score, ended up costing the Packers a chance to be the potential Super Bowl contenders. He missed a kick from 40-49-yard range, but maybe the reason behind it could have been the rainy weather. But again, the struggles of Carlson kicking the ball continue to be on the top level. Overall, he’s missed 10 kicks in the Packers’ final 12 games. Let’s get to know more about the 25-year-old athlete.

After the Packers kicker Mason Crosby left the franchise after 16 years, the team drafted Carlson as the 207 overall pick in the 3 round of the 2023 draft. Before arriving to the Packers, he played 5 seasons with the Auburn Tigers and was known as one of the most bountiful kickers. However, after this game against the Niners, a lot of people might not look at him the same.

The 25-year-old, 6’5 Packers’ placekicker has played 17 games in the season. He had 33 attempts in his first season so far and completed 27 of them, with a completion of 81.8%. On top of this, he attempted for 39 extra points but was able to convert only 34 of them. He is tied at 29 in terms of FG% in the league and has 115 points to show for the season.

Interestingly, Anders Carlson’s brother Daniel Carson is the placekicker for the Las Vegas Raiders.

Anders Carlson’s older brother has the third-longest streak in NFL history

Daniel Carlson joined the league back in 2018 with the Minnesota Vikings. When the Las Vegas Raiders’ season ended, the elder brother was sitting at 110 points with 26-30 attempts cleared. He is 100% on extra points as he didn’t miss any 32 of those points.

A unique thing to note about Daniel Carlson is that he is tied first in terms of extra points completed. There might be a lot of other kickers in this position, but the elder brother is ranked 18 overall in the league in terms of his field goal completions. However, the same cannot be said about his younger brother.

The 28-year-old placekicker has made 41 consecutive goals from Week 8 (2021 season)-Week 11 (2022), the third-longest streak in NFL history. Anders Carlson ranks pretty low as mentioned earlier, and Matt LaFleur’s lack of confidence in the kicker might end up being abrasive for the team and Carlson’s relationship with them. But again, there’s always a scope of improvement and Carlson has a lot to learn from his older brother.
