If you’re winning the John Mackey Award, any college football player will bow to you. There have been 24 recipients of this prestigious award. The list includes many names who went on to become NFL stars. The list goes all the way from Dallas Clark then to Mark Andrews. But now the latest addition is the Arizona Cardinals’ offensive star Trey McBride.
Trey who’s a tight end for Arizona and a first Pro Bowler, had a blast this season. He set a franchise single-season record for receptions by a tight end with 111 catches. That made him the Cardinals’ offensive player of the year for 2024. With all these achievements and money in the bank, his real inspiration comes from his family. Especially his ‘Two moms’.

Who is Trey McBride’s mom?
The tight end’s mom, Kate McBride is married to Jen Mcbride. You heard it right, they’re a lesbian couple. They met in the mid-90s and shifted to Morgan Fort, Colorado in 2003. That was a time when same-sex parenting wasn’t common. After all, Trey is the first NFL player to have parents of the same sex! Together, they have 5 children, 4 sons: Bryce, Toby, Trey, and Dylan with a daughter Taya.
Kate was the one who conceived Trey, but it wasn’t easy. “They actually considered me a single mom. And I do remember telling my parents that I’m pregnant, and they said, ‘Why would you want to have a baby as a single woman?’ And I said, ‘I’m not a single woman. I’m in a relationship.’” Said Kate to the Today, while talking about her parents’ reaction. Talking about her daily life, Kate also breeds white golden European retrievers. She also made sure that her children were actively involved in sports. While speaking to The Denver Post Kate said, “We started them with wrestling so they would be worn out and go to bed early.” Good hack, moms, please note!
Who is the TE’s other mom Jen?
Jen’s profession is quite interesting. She is a deputy sheriff in Morgan County. That pretty much sums up where Trey got this fighting instinct. Jen and Kate are both into social causes as well, like the Meals on Wheels America Program. It is an initiative designed to combat senior hunger and isolation.
She was the one who actually got to know about Trey’s passion first. Speaking to the Today Jen said, “When your kid comes to you when they’re little and they say they want to be president, you’re like, ‘OK, honey, that’s great.’ He wanted to play in the NFL, and he’s going to do it.”

Though Trey was born in Greely, he spent the rest of his growing-up years in Morgan Fort. There, he attended Fort Morgan High School and excelled in most of the sports. That includes football, baseball, and basketball. But his athletic career started at Colorado State University, where he became a unanimous All-American. Then won the John Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end.
Trey has credited this success to his family. But he’s also of the opinion that there’s nothing unusual about having lesbian parents. Guess, it’s the place as well, that accepted the couple as time went on. “It’s been a fantastic place to raise our kids,” told Jen to The Athletic when asked about the people of Fort Morgan. The story is quite inspirational, and the tight end would want this motivation to go on for the next season as well.
Although the Cardinals failed to advance, Trey was the standout player for them. He took 111 catches from 147 targets for a total of 1,146 yards. He found the end zone twice with receiving touchdowns. Along with that, he added two more touchdowns on running plays and fumble recoveries. He had an average of 10.3 yards per reception and caught 75.5% of his targets. Trey doesn’t have the same number of touchdowns as some of the top tight ends like Travis Kelce or Mark Andrews. But considering this was his second year, it is only going to get better.
