“My dad, from a competitive standpoint, put something in me that’s different from what most people have,” Trey Lance reflected his sentiments for his father, Carlton in an interview. “My mom is much more — she’s going to tell me she loves me at the end of the day, regardless of what happens,” Cowboys QB stated. It indeed showcased that his parents shaped his NFL journey, to help him carve his way to the league.

However, the former North Dakota State Bison player is yet to solidify his status in the league. Unfortunately, after being selected by the 49ers in the 2021 NFL draft, he only made only 4 starts. This culminated in his trade to the Cowboys in 2023. However, he appears upbeat about his NFL ambitions. Because of his parents’ tremendous support, he is moving forward in his career.

Who are Carlton and Angie Lance?

Allegedly, NFL QB’s father, Carlton Lance greatly influenced his athletic journey. Being an athlete, Carlton raised him with athletic principles and discipline. Reportedly, just like his son, he is also a former football and track star. Apparently, he excelled in his football skills as a cornerback at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) from 1988 to 1991.

During his SMSU days, Fort Myers, Florida native, Lance left many in awe with his impressive records and accolades. He recorded five interceptions and 136 tackles with 28 pass break-ups at SMSU. Not only this, he also notched the  NAIA All-District award and All-Conference distinction awards multiple times. Probably, it might help him to become the SMSU’s athletic Hall of Fame. It truly solidified his status in the football world.

Post his remarkable collegiate career, his dad also played one season as the  Saskatchewan Rough Riders player in the Canadian Football League. Additionally, he also etched his name in the World League while playing for the London Monarchs. Interestingly, Carlton also had NFL opportunities in his hands. Allegedly, Carlton attended the 49ers and Houston Oilers’ training camp.

Not only as a football athlete, but he also left his legacy on the track and field in 1991. As a dominant runner of the conference championship 4×100-meter relay team, he rocked at SMSU. His team set an impressive school and conference record of 42.7 seconds.

Following his playing career ended, Carlton decided to move back to Marshall, Minnesota. And, where he attended Southwest Minnesota State and met, his then-future wife, Angie.

At that time, Trey Lance’s mom was serving as the first-grade teacher. Allegedly, after working as a teacher for 10 years, Angie also served as the senior recruiter for the largest frozen-food company, Schwan’s Company in Marshall. It’s also where the couple raised Trey with his sibling, Bryce, who are also following their own football aspirations. Just like Trey, Bryce is also a North Dakota State Bison football player.

Thus it is clear that his athletic dad and mom helped him in shaping his NFL trajectory since his early days.

How have Trey Lance’s parents fostered values in him?

Carlton and Angie played an important role in shaping Trey’s football journey. With their unique parenting and hard work, they have been his constant supporter throughout his athletic drive.  Earlier during an interview, Trey Lance’s mom emphasized being supportive guardians to his son.

“I think we balanced each other out. We’re not perfect. We worked really hard. We had lots of conversations about what was best, and how to best support them,” she added. Not only this,  Angie’s persistent message is enough to remind Trey about his goals. She often motivates him, saying lowering the boom is not his ultimate destiny.

“And I just don’t think that is what God intended for any of us. I think we’re here to do so much more than what our job is,” his mom remarked in an interview. Not only his mother, but, his dad too is his biggest supporter. His true guidance helped him to become an NFL star. “I would always tell him, this guy is trying to hit you, so you’ve got to have some malice in your heart. You are trying to end his function,” Carlton added.

His father has consistently been brutally honest in his assessments of any scenario. He says only what is necessary. “My mom was the type that was going to tell us that she loves us and we played great even if we didn’t. and My dad was realistic with us,” Trey Lance added during the 49ers Talk show aired in 2021.

It is no wonder that he has carved his path to the NFL with his parent’s immense support.
