Are German players the NFL's best-kept secret, or are they the future of the league?

Germany is buzzing in the NFL scene these days! And with the first-ever regular-season game in the country, it’s time to talk about German players who’ve left their fingerprints on the sport. Some have even rocked the ultimate trophy—the Super Bowl trophy! So, let’s dive into who’s snagged those blinged-out rings. And what makes their journeys so dope?

Alright, first up, we’ve got Sebastian Vollmer! This dude is the real deal—a two-time Super Bowl champ with the New England Patriots, joining the ranks of legends in Super Bowl XLIX (2015) and Super Bowl LI (2017). This guy was protecting Tom Brady like a boss. All as an offensive lineman. Fun fact! He kicked off his football journey at 14 with the Düsseldorf Panther in Germany.

But wait! Other legends include Markus Koch, who was part of the Washington Redskins when they snagged Super Bowl XXII in 1988. Then there’s Chris Manno, who got his shiny ring with the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI (2012). Klaus Lichtenstern and Marius Völler also got in on the action, with Lichtenstern being a solid piece of the San Francisco 49ers and Völler repping the Green Bay Packers during Super Bowl XXXI. These guys are proof that Germany is bringing serious fire to the NFL.

One player to watch is Hero Kanu, a German defensive lineman who scored a scholarship to Ohio State. There’s been plenty of chatter about how many European players are stepping into the spotlight, and it’s exciting to see Germany leading the pack. Of course, not every player finds success after getting drafted. Moritz Böhringer, for example, had no American football background and landed with the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round back in 2016. But he eventually made it onto their practice squad. But that’s the nature of the game—persistence is key!

Now, what about some German players who might not have Super Bowl rings? Well, they are still making some serious noise. As a Raiders fullback, Jakob Johnson made history in 2020. How? By being the first player from the NFL’s International Player Pathway program to score a freaking TD! Like the dude caught a 1-yard pass from Cam Newton, marking a milestone for international players. It’s wild how these guys are paving the way!

Then there’s Björn Werner! As a first-round draft pick for the Colts in 2013, he rocked it as the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year. Sure, injuries cut his NFL adventures short, but now he’s a media star back in Germany. Talk about a comeback! And let’s not forget Kasim Edebali, the Saints DE, who boosted his status as the most prolific German-born sack artist with eight gnarly sacks.

Throw in Markus Kuhn while we’re at it! This defensive tackle literally scored a touchdown off a fumble recovery against the Tennessee Titans in 2014. That’s pure chaos in the best way! And don’t sleep on Uwe von Schamann, the kicker who snagged his spot with the Miami Dolphins in 1979 and played six seasons. He might not have won the big one, but he sure made his mark in history.
