Talk about a quarterback whose injury is more well-known than his pro football career and Teddy Bridgewater will top your list. “The entire bottom half of my leg was one way, & my foot was another way“. Bridgewater will answer like this if you ask him about his injury. And if you ask his coach and trainers, they’ll say that he could lose his leg.
The Lions QB suffered a dislocation of his knee and tore his ACL. And turns out, it wasn’t just a season-ending injury but nearly a career-ending injury for Bridgewater. But here’s the thing. The QB returned with a steady re-start to the gridiron and thrashed the opposition in his later seasons, especially in 2020 and 2021, where he amassed over 3,000 yards in each season. And for this miraculous recovery, Teddy credits his mom.

The 32-year-old QB has recently made a comeback to pro football after making a name in coaching at his alma mater. Teddy is the youngest of four children of Rose Murphy and Teddy Bridgewater Sr. While there is no information available for his dad, Bridgwater Senior, it was his mom who raised Teddy and his three older siblings.
Back in 2006, when Bridgewater was just 14 years old, his mom, Rose, suffered breast cancer. When Rose told her son about her medical condition, Teddy wanted to leave football to focus on his mother’s health and family. However, Rose didn’t allow him, as she wanted him to continue playing. And guess what? That eventually led him to the NFL.
Through chemotherapy and radiation treatment, Rose Murphy survived breast cancer and later became an inspiration for Bridgewater when he suffered a gruesome knee injury in August 2016 at the practice field of the Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings drafted Bridgewater in the 2014 NFL draft and in his rookie season; the QB started 12 of the 13 games that he played. After rushing nearly 3,000 yards in his rookie season, Teddy entered his second season as a starting QB. The number 5 amassed over 3,200 yards and racked up 14 touchdowns. However, his career took a break at the time when he was in line to be one of the greatest QBs of the league after he suffered a knee injury in his next season.

Given his mom is a breast cancer survivor, Bridgewater declared his mother’s battle as an inspiration and came back stronger from the injury. “In order to have a testimony, you have to have a test. I come from amazing DNA, I watched my mom fight and win against breast cancer,” he said in a statement shared by the Vikings. “We will, as a team, attack my rehab with the same vigor and energy. My faith is strong, my faith is unwavering, and my vision is clear. My purpose will not be denied.”
After having a successful run with the Panthers, Broncos, and the Dolphins, the 32-year-old entered the coaching world. In his first season as the head coach of the Miami Northwestern High School, Teddy led his alma mater to win the Class 3A Florida High School Athletic Association state title. And here’s the kicker. The veteran QB has signed up with the Lions and is ready to enter the gridiron. Once Again!
