Apart from his mother, Pat, 24, credits his dad, Patrick Surtain, who influenced him greatly. Just like him, his dad also played at cornerback positions for 11 seasons. Serving as the defensive backs coach for Florida State University since 2023, Surtain Sr. also boasts an accomplished career.
After being drafted by the Dolphins in the 1998 NFL draft, he earned a three-time Pro Bowler nomination. In 2005, he was traded to the Chiefs. And then he served as a defensive assistant coach for the Dolphins.
Not only in the NFL but Patrick Surtain also excelled in his football skills at Southern Miss Golden Eagles. He garnered attention as a youth player by becoming a two-year starter and four-year letterman.
Before becoming an NFL star, he also played basketball and baseball and ran track in the initial years of his career at Edna Karr High School in New Orleans. And that helped me choose football at the end of the day, ’cause I felt like I had a sort of love for it at an early age,” he asserted further.

Inspired by his NFL dad’s established career, he profoundly learned important lessons from his dad for the cornerback position. “He had an established career, a great career, actually — three-time Pro Bowler, was a part of one of the great Miami defensive squads back in the day,” he continued. Pat also expressed his feelings about his learnings from his dad. “Just teaching me the different levels of the cornerback position,” he retreated further.
