Do you think Kingsley Suamataia's success is more about talent or the unwavering support from his parents?

What do we know about Kingsley Sumataia? He’s a six-foot-four Samoan O-Lineman coming out of BYU, solidifying his place in the Kansas City Chiefs. Did you know he comes from a football-oriented family? Did you know the Lions’ tackle Penei Sewell is his relative and has taught him the tricks of the trade?

Speaking of family, Kingsley’s journey to the NFL cannot be described without mentioning his parents, Leroy, and Tamara Sumataia. So, who are his folks and what is their story? Let’s find out. While we don’t know a lot about his mother, Tamara, his father is a social media savant who never fails to give shutouts to his son at every step of his journey.

Leroy is the host of the Good Story Podcast where he talks about his roots, his love for arts, and what’s going around in the sports verse. “We give Polynesian Love to the world. We talk that talk about sports, music, style, food, culture, and whatever is happening in the hood worldwide!!! From LA to Laie, 676 to 684, New Zealand to Australia, New York to the Bay, West Valley to Happy Valley, and all other neighborhoods in between,” as his father describes the podcast.

However, growing up, Leroy didn’t know that his son was going to be in the NFL, or whether he was going to play football at all. In a conversation with Xavier Su’a-filo on his podcast, he admitted, “First of all, your son is not built like everyone else,” Leroy said. “That’s another thing about assessing what your kid can do. I wish my son played baseball. I just know that’s just not him.”

Well, safe to say that his assessment worked out and his son is part of a back-to-back championship-winning team. But what about his mother? Other than the fact that her hometown is Laie, Hawaii, we don’t know a lot about her. It’s not clear, but the Sumataia couple moved to Orem, Utah to give better opportunities to their son.

However, his father’s hand in molding his career doesn’t stop there.

Have an interesting take?

Leroy Sumataia boasts 876 followers on Instagram and it’s full of highlights of his son. He even has a photo with LeBron James on his Instagram! But coming back to the Sumataia family, a week ago, his father uploaded a video on IG titled, “Live your dreams, speak life into it! #TeamSuamataia.” The video shows the lively moment when Kingsley got selected in the draft and his whole family was there to witness it.

As soon as his name was announced, he got up, started jumping, and hugged his father. The words written in the video said, “Just a kid chasing his dream.” Also, a week ago from the time of publishing, his father went to the Chiefs’ training camp to watch his son “do his thing.” It’s a video of all the football moms and dads gathered at the Chiefs’ training camp, bringing their children along for the ride.

However, one of the most prominent and memorable pieces of media on his IG shows Kingsley attending the Chiefs training camp for the first time. It’s clear that his father is a fanatic about his son, recording him like he would a 7-year-old kid. The video was captioned, “Day 1 First @nfl @chiefs Camp let’s get it son #76Suamataia @baby_kingz76 proud dad!”

What else can a child want from their parents except for their love and blessings? Kingsley went to Oregon initially but came back because he felt homesick and wanted to be closer to his parents. Most people his age want to move as far away from their home as humanly possible, but there Kingsley was, with a desire to stay beside them. It speaks a lot about his childhood and how his parents honed him.
