As a football quarterback and running back at Bowling Green State University for the Falcons, he showcased his dominance on the field.

And, then, he made a significant impact from 1968 to 1981, working as an assistant coach for several college programs. These included the Western Kentucky University, the University of Michigan, the University of Pittsburgh, Stanford University, the University of San Diego, and many more.
Meanwhile, his coaching career, in 1982, he helped Western Michigan University athletes build their impressive athletic portfolio. He assisted them as the head coach till 1986.
Three years later, he became Western Kentucky University’s head coach. From a career point of view, during this time (from 1989 to 2002), he gained significant attention in NCAA football. And, soon, Jack became a phenomenon in NCAA football. He led WKU, claiming an NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship title in 2002.
