Is Jalen Hurts' success a testament to the power of family support and independence?

It can’t be easy growing up the middle child. You don’t Malcolm in the Middle as a guide, Jalen Hurts’ life story is enough. The oldest kid got all the attention before you showed up, and the youngest becomes the family’s angel who can do no wrong. That’s just how the story goes.

You learn to be independent; Jalen’s dad taught him how to cook crawfish when he was just 5 years old. By the time he was in middle school, he’d whip that treat up for the family at a moment’s notice. Beyond having his parents to guide him, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback had his older brother as a role model and a younger sister to plan for. Here’s more about them.

Jalen Hurts isn’t the first quarterback in his family, you know? His older brother, Averion Hurts Jr. grew up in Channelview, Texas, alongside the rest of the family, and played quarterback for Channelview High School. He also played baseball at this time, but it’s football he stuck with as he went to Texas Southern. He passed for 2,854 yards and 26 touchdowns over 19 games, though he did have 13 interceptions too.

After his time on the field, he decided to stay involved in football off the field too. This came to fruition when he accepted a coaching position with Baytown Lee High School, Houston, in 2023. He works as an offensive coordinator and track coach and boasts that his passion is developing quarterbacks. His dad and namesake, Averion Hurts Sr., coached football too, at Channelview High School when the boys were growing up.

Have an interesting take?

Averion Jr. seems to have found what he’s happy doing and has settled down in Houston with his wife, Alexandrea Francis. She’s an athlete herself, with a background in track and field, in which she competed at Mississippi Valley State University.

Jalen’s little sister Kynnedy Hurts also went to Channelview High School and played volleyball there. Her family always knew she had a future, and they’ve supported her all the way. Jalen said, “She’s the smartest one of the three of us, and I watch her put in an endless amount of work.” Early on in his career, when he was on his smaller rookie contract, Jalen put aside $70,000 for his sister’s education. He later said he expected her to get a scholarship purely based on the effort she put into her game, but you can never be too safe.

We don’t know for sure if Kynnedy did get that scholarship, but she currently seems to be at Louisiana State University. Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mass communication, she’s due to graduate in 2027. There are currently no available records for her college play, or even information on if she is playing for Louisiana. But given the level of faith, her brother has in her work ethic, who can tell what Kynnedy Hurts is going to achieve?
