Coming out of NC State, Jakobi Meyers scored nine TDs while having 168 receptions to his name. His 92 receptions record in 2018 also broke Torry Holt’s single-season record in North Carolina. Well, those numbers showed his acumen for finding gaps that made it easier for quarterbacks to target him. After spending three seasons with the Wolfpack, Meyers joined the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2019.
Although he continued to stack up those receptions on the offense, his inability to reach the end zone plummed his value. Those concerns started to grow bigger as Meyers didn’t score a single TD in his first two seasons in the NFL. Seeing him struggle to break the deadlock, Meyers’ dad only had one wish in his mind. And that was to see his son score his first career receiving TD.

James Meyers was Jakobi’s biggest supporter when he went through a lengthy slump of not scoring a single receiving TD. Even Meyers spilled the tea on how desperate James was to witness his son score his first receiving TD, “He probably wants it more than I do. That’s like the last thing he said to me before I get out of the car to go into the stadium. Let’s get this touchdown this game. I’m like. I’ll do my best. I got you. I’m trying. He kind of brings it up here and there. Like, maybe this week will be the week.” James didn’t only use words to fire up his son to break that TD hoodoo.
He never compromised in watching his Jakobi play in hopes of catching that first TD live, “He’s been doing his best to support me and come up here because all my family is down south. Just the fact that he comes up here and puts in the most effort that he can, watches the games and is here for means a lot to me.” As far as wishes go, they eventually get fulfilled if you continue to work harder. And Jakobi Meyers’ first receiving TD was a testament to his dedication to keep knocking until the doors open.
Although it took him two seasons, Meyers finally scored his first receiving TD in 2021, taking on the Browns. It was an 11-yard pass from Brian Hoyer that broke Meyers’ end zone hoodoo. And fulfilled James’ wish to watch his son score that all-elusive TD. Well, he went on to score his second seven weeks later, this time from a 4-yard pass made by Mac Jones.

Although his contract ain’t that lucrative given his production in the NFL. It was a massive pay rise for a rookie who played four seasons in New England. Now that he is entering his second season with the Raiders, Meyers would surely be hoping he can continue his rise in the NFL.
