Born on December 11, 1992, in West Palm Beach, Florida, Brissett was raised by his mother Lisa Brown single-handedly. Brown was her son’s ardent supporter, even if it occasionally meant being harsh with his coaches. According to MMQB, during Friday night games, Brown was heard swearing at Brissett High School head coach Jack Daniels from the stands.

As Daniels has said to MMQB, “I didn’t really get to know her until 10th-grade year when she cussed me out for not putting her son in the game. She’s a great lady and a competitive lady.”

Referring to Brissett’s selection in New England Patriots in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft, Brown said, “They’re getting a a hard worker, a dedicated god-fearing man. Someone that has no character flaws, he is who he is and his integrity is everything to him.”

But, despite being a “dedicated” head, Brissett’s time in Gainesville didn’t go as expected. However, his mother believes he learned a lot from it. “It taught him how to deal with adversity, how to stay focused, how not to feed into negativity. How to be a better person and to stay dedicated to where he’s going,” Brown told the Boston Globe.

Well, in his initial days, Brissett was not sure if he would choose football as his career. Along with football, he also achieved success in basketball which made it difficult for him to pin down on one. Brissett was a two-sport standout at Dwyer High School, ranking third in his class as a dual-threat quarterback and a four-star football prospect in addition to his basketball career. “There was a moment where it was basketball or football, basketball or football…which way are we gonna go…he knows that I’m a big football fan and I think that’s why he chose football,” Brissett’s mother Lisa Brown told the Boston Globe.

When Brissett was recruited by both the University of Miami and the University of Florida, he ultimately decided to play football instead of basketball. Brissett signed with Florida, defying the wishes of his own mother. His mother never liked “how Florida handled the process.” She was “never able to meet the head coach.” As she has mentioned, “All the other coaches took the time to come and meet me. Will (Muschamp) never did. I never met him face to face. And I find that very disrespectful.”

Lisa Brown told the story of how Charlie Weis had called to reassure her that Florida was the best option. Weis, who had served in the same capacity for the Patriots, was the offensive coordinator for the Gators at the time. Charlie Weis called and insisted, “let me let you speak to the best quarterback in the NFL,’ and I was like ‘Peyton Manning?’ He said, ‘no, Tom Brady.” Brady was bragging to Brissett’s mother about what a great quarterback and coach Charlie Weis would be for Jacoby, and how hilarious it is that now that they are playing together, Jacoby would be able to learn from Tom Brady.

In an interview with MaxPreps, she said that Brissett’s decision was nothing but a “hard pill” for her to “swallow.” However, she was impressed with Charlie Weis’ “straightforward” approach to her about the recruiting process. “I have to say that Charlie (Weis) is awesome. Through the whole process, he’s been very straightforward and I can handle that. We see eye to eye. He’s on point, just like I am. We didn’t beat around the bush about anything. I trust Charlie, but not Will,” said Brown.

Before Dwyer’s basketball game versus Jupiter, Brissett made his choice to go with Florida known to a sizable gathering of 1,000 people. He told the Palm Beach Post, “I can’t please everybody. I’m hurt that I hurt my mom, as you can see I was crying with her before the game. She means the world to me.”

Although he felt it was the right decision, Brissett acknowledged that it was difficult to defy his mother’s desires. “It came down to UM and Florida. I just had to follow my heart, and my heart lies in Florida,” Brissett told the paper.

However, he lost out to Jeff Driskel for the starting position in his sophomore year, which caused him to leave. Since Florida coach Will Muschamp declared in late November that Driskel would be the starting quarterback in 2013, many people were not surprised by Brissett’s defection. Brissett moved in January 2013 to attend North Carolina State University. Brissett became the Wolfpack’s starting quarterback in 2014 after missing the 2013 campaign due to transfer regulations.
