Deonte Banks credits his success to his parents—how important is family in an athlete's career?

The New York Giants bolstered their defense when they hired Deonte Banks, a round 1 prospect from the University of Maryland. The six-foot-two CBs parents stood beside him the day he graduated and were in the same room the day he got the call from the New York Giants GM Joe Schoen.

It’s hard not to think that a player of Deonte’s caliber won’t make it to the big leagues. He was ready for it since he was a child. In his own words, his father used to take him to the steepest hill, and he used to race to the top as a form of workout. That too, early in the morning. It prompted us to know more about his parents.

Well, Deonte Banks was born to Jamal Banks and Laura Bethea on March 3, 2001. We don’t have much information about his parents’ profession or what the CBs childhood was like. However, when he was selected by the New York Giants, he revealed something interesting about his father.

“I remember when we were younger, he wanted a Honda Odyssey. My father worked at the Independent Can Company. He didn’t make that much money. Sometimes he worked seven days a week, sometimes six, but he always worked 12 hours a day,” wrote Deonte in “In His Words,” column by the NY Giants.

Watching his father work tirelessly for hours imbibed the same “dedication and work ethic” in the Giants CB. So, upon listening to the wise words of his father, Banks “locked in” and blocked all the “outside noise out.” That’s also because his father always chose to lead by example and was a man of his words.

Banks described in his autography that his father would buy the things that he said he would buy. And just like that, Deonte saw his father Jamal upgrade from a Honda Odyssey to a Honda Couple before he finally bought himself a Honda Infiniti. That’s the reason why Deonte wants to pay his father back for all of his efforts.
