Matthew Rush, a former athlete himself, has been a constant presence in his son’s life. Originally from Midland, Michigan, Matthew was a TE for Dow High School. Not just that, he helped the team win a Class A state title in 1976! He later attended Notre Dame, playing baseball as an infielder—so he knows a thing or two about competitive sports. This athletic history influenced Cooper’s interest in sports early on. Watching his dad’s passion for sports was part of what spurred Cooper to chase his NFL dreams.

Matthew brings his own traditions to each of Cooper’s games, creating a signature “dad style” that’s become famous among the Rush family and beyond. Known for munching on Haribo gummy bears to ease his nerves, Matthew also has a game-day superstition. Since Cooper’s high school days, he’s worn the same football-printed boxers for every one of his son’s starts. These small rituals have become a part of the Rush family lore. During Cooper’s 2021 game against the Minnesota Vikings, Matthew’s anxious excitement was captured on camera, his hands on his hat, holding his breath with every play. A dad truly invested in every moment!

Beyond the quirks, Matthew deeply understands Cooper’s level-headedness. “He never gets too high or too low,” Matthew has often remarked, a calmness that he’s seen in Cooper since childhood. Whether it was arranging Matchbox cars in perfect rows as a boy or handling pressure on the NFL field, Cooper’s steady demeanor has always been evident. Matthew’s pride was palpable as he watched Cooper lead a game-winning drive against the Vikings, seeing his son fulfill his dreams with the poise that’s come to define him. But he isn’t the only parent in support of his son.

When Cooper made his first NFL start, Frances trusted in his calm, steady approach. Leading up to the game, she kept her nerves in check, knowing Cooper had proven himself time and again. “He’s always come through,” she said, watching him take the field.
