Chris Godwin was 6-years old when his father, Rod Godwin Sr., knew that his son loved football. And he always encouraged him. At first, the young boy thought every father was like that. But as he grew up, he found out it was not the case. When he arrived at Penn State, his father didn’t come to the games regularly. But the support was always there.
Godwin Senior ran a commercial laundry business that worked for a V.A. hospital. Sometimes, the young receiver helped his dad to run the business. But the love for sports ran in the family. His father also played basketball as a shooter and was nicknamed Rod or Rifle.
One thing that remained with Chris Godwin was the freedom to play football on his terms. He often recalls that his father gave him a free hand to play the game as long as he liked it. It also motivated him to do big. The lifelong father-son bond broke on December 31, 2024, when Godwin Sr. passed away because of cancer. Feeling emotional after losing his rock, the WR posted an emotional message about their relationship.
