You might have heard of Arthur Smith, the offensive coordinator of the Steelers. But not many are aware of his journey. Arthur’s story is one that is worthy of admiration and respect, as he’s living proof of the saying, “Make your own way.” To learn why that is, we need to first focus on where it all started. Born in Tennessee, he started his coaching tenure in 2007. With the Washington Redskins as a defensive quality control coach before moving to Ole Miss and the Titans. He was promoted to offensive coordinator for the Titans after coaching tight ends and began making a name for himself. Smith was with the Titans for their 28-12 victory over the Ravens in the Divisional Round in 2020. That was the period when the Titans were berserk on their offense in every single game.

Not long after, he was the Falcons’ head coach, a new challenge for him. Though he showed potential, the Falcons’ performance under his leadership fell short. Atlanta never won more than two games in a row under him. Owner Arthur Blank fired Smith after a 48-17 loss to the Saints. But he didn’t lose hope and bounced back by joining the Steelers as their offensive coordinator in 2024. Smith and the Steelers are both looking for a comeback, this is already poetry in motion. Whether this will be a fruitful journey or will end soon, time will tell. However, this drive to work hard and persevere in Smith can be traced back to his family background, as it is often within the family where a man builds his principles and values.

Arthur Smith’s mother, Diane Smith, seems to keep a low profile. There isn’t much public information available about her personal life or her role in Smith’s life. But we do know about his father, and it is an absolute shocker. Arthur’s father is none other than Fredrick W. Smith. Yes, you read that right, the billionaire founder of FedEx. Now the whole “make your own way” thing makes sense right? Even after having one of the richest people in the world as your father, Arthur chose to pave his own path.

His dad started FedEx in 1971, innovatively inventing overnight shipping in the logistics and mailing industry. FedEx has become one of the largest express transportation companies in the world and reached more than 220 countries worldwide under his leadership. Frederick has an estimated net worth of $6.1 billion as of January 2025. FedEx reported an annual revenue of approximately $94 billion for fiscal 2024. Arthur set an example by not living off his father’s money but rather off his father’s values, building his own empire from the ground up.
