How much of Andy Reid's success can be attributed to his parents' unique and accomplished careers?

Kansas City Chiefs head coach is often asked how he comes up with such wild plays and different strategies or calculations in the games. Well, the answer to this was revealed by his son Britt Reid in 2020. Andy Reid is a well-known head coach in the league, who has won four Super Bowl titles with two teams. But as we see his smart work in achieving all this fame, a big part of the credit also goes to his parents and their profession.

Born on March 19, 1958, in Los Angeles, California, Andy Reid is the youngest son of father Walter Reid and mother Elizabeth Reid. The couple also shared a 10-year older son than Andy, named Reggie Reid. And together the two, developed their children into self-disciplined people – thanks to dad Walter’s Navy veteran connection.

By profession, Walter served as a “World War II Navy veteran, as well as was a first responder at Pearl Harbor.” Originally from Cape Cod, Walter, after the service, took his wife and children to California, where both Reid’s sons grew up. While recalling his father’s strict personality, Andy once said, “I can’t tell you I didn’t get spanked. Dad would have the razor strap and go, ‘Better take care of business.’ So I tried to stay away from the razor strap, and tried to be smarter than that razor strap.”

Probably, that’s why Andy has inherited strictness, smartness, and discipline in his life now. But there’s one more thing he has inherited from his father – his prankster side.

Yes, we haven’t seen much of Andy’s humorous side, but when he interacts with the media or even gives a speech on stage, this side is easily visible. For instance, while talking about Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce’s relationship last season, he made sure to take a part of the credit by saying that he played the “cupid” in it.

Similarly, Andy’s father, who was a strict man, also liked to poke fun at times. After serving in the Navy, Walter opted for a scenic artist role in Hollywood. During this, he “brought some props, including wigs from the film studio for fun at home.” But unfortunately, the man of pure heart reportedly died of cancer in 1992.

On the other hand, Andy’s momma, Elizabeth, was a radiologist by profession. She studied at McGill University, and “was one of the first women to graduate from the McGill Faculty of Medicine.” Both children, Andy & Reggie, were very close to their mother, who always supported them through thick & thin. However, she also passed away this July due to old age, but before that in April, she celebrated her 105th birthday with Reggie and Andy Reid.

The head coach organized a lavish venue for her birthday celebration, which was adorned with flowers and vibrant decorations. This grand party was attended by close friends, family, and Andy’s colleagues from the football world. And at the party, raising the toast, an emotional Andy, loudly exclaimed, “Happy Birthday, Mom!” So, it is clear that Andy was close to his mother.

Andy Reid’s journey wasn’t just about hard work and talent. It’s a story deeply rooted in his parents’ influence. His mother, Elizabeth Reid, was a radiologist, hence, she passed down her love for science and math to her son. This shaped Andy’s sharp and analytical mind, helping him calculate his moves in NFL games.

On the other hand, his father, Walter Reid, worked as a scenic artist, creating vibrant backdrops for TV and film. His creative energy sparked Andy’s imagination, teaching him to think outside the box.

This is also evident in Andy’s son, Britt Reid’s explanation, where he mentioned, “My dad is actually a great artist himself. He can do caricatures — I mean, a lot of stuff. Carvings, stuff like that. Of anybody. He’ll just whip them up. (Thanks to Walter’s artistic profession). So he’s got that side, then he’s got that intellectual side that his mother passed along, the more refined, calculating side. I think that serves him well, in this business especially.
