Firing Nick Sirianni: A colossal mistake or a necessary move for the Eagles' future?

Rumors are that Nick Sirianni might end up on the chopping block soon enough as there were rumors that the Philadelphia Eagles were eyeing Bill Belichick to take over Sirianni’s head coaching position. The Eagles lost the last six of their seven games and for that and Sirianni had to prove it to Jeffrey Lurie that he could take care of business going forward. Can he?

Last season was a disaster for the Philly team because not only did they lose to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a so called “mid” team, but also ended up replacing two defensive coordinators throughout the season, Matt Patricia and Sean Desai. To that end, the hosts of SPEAK discussed whether Sirianni should be on the “hot seat” this season or not.

While Emmanuel Acho doubts that the Philadelphia Eagles will be no good under Nick Sirianni, James Jones of the show thinks that firing their HC would be a grave mistake because he’s been winning since he joined the Eagles franchise. To this day, Sirianni holds the highest win percentage in the franchise’s history (.667). So, should Sirianni be on the hot seat? Acho thinks so.

“There’s a reason your teacher always asks you to show your work because if you can’t show your work, I can’t guarantee you can do it again. And because Nick Sirianni could not show his work, ‘Hey how’d the Eagles get to the Super Bowl that year? Oh, you had of the greatest defenses ever as it pertains to getting sacks.’ Can you do it again? No, you can’t,” said Acho of Sirianni.

The last time the Eagles won a Super Bowl was in the 2017 season with a different crew. They went against the Chiefs in the Super Bowl following the 2022 season but lost and to add to the woes, the ending of the last season was a disaster, so much so that Sirianni had a lengthy meeting with Jeffrey Lurie to justify his intentions for the team. Now, the rumors about the Eagles being interested in Bill Belichick surface as Sirianni hangs on to a thread of hope.

The Eagles HC was quick to dismiss the chatter in his talks with CBS Sports. “All I really took at this was I had Mr. Lurie’s [Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie] trust and they said, ‘Hey, let’s go back and let’s do it again,’ said the Eagles HC about Belichick hiring.

He further noted, “That’s all I thought about. I haven’t really thought about anything else. I think it’s really tricky to think about things that you can’t control.” Perhaps these are just rumors because Bill Belichick is a gun for hire and the job openings weren’t posted. Also, hiring Belichick might lead to the Eagles revamping their coaching staff, salary cap and some other things in the roster which they might not be ready for.

But for whatever reason, James Jones of the show had to defend Nick Sirianni considering the fact that last season was a bad one, and it doesn’t mean that it’ll be repeated in the future.

James Jones thinks that no harm will come to Sirianni

Consider this: the Eagles were coming off a disastrous 2020 season with a 4-11 record under Doug Pederson, who also happens to have a Super Bowl win with the Eagles. The torch got passed to Nick Sirianni who immediately livened the team with a 9-8 record the following season. He did his career best with the Eagles last season as he finished with an 11-6 record. So far, Sirianni is 2-3 in the playoffs with the Eagles, which James Jones thinks can be refined.

“Philadelphia will be making a big, big mistake if this season doesn’t go as planned and they let go of Nick Sirianni with what Nick Sirianni has shown us. Whether he’s calling the games or not,” said James Jones, the Super Bowl winner. This narrative of “Sirianni’s do or die season” has been around since the Eagles had a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Bucs in the last season.

However, this season is different because the Eagles did some heavy lifting during the off season. First off, Matt Patricia and Sean Desai aren’t a part of the Eagles anymore and they’ve hired Vic Fangio as their defensive coordinator. Secondly, the addition of players like Saquon Barkley and other rookie receivers and running backs might end up as a deciding factor for Eagles success this year because their offense wasn’t that mature last year. Moreover, Jalen Hurts might have recovered from his broken finger so all the signs are pointing up for the Eagles franchise.
