Should NFL players be allowed to express political views, or is the field no place for politics?

The 49ers came on top against the Cowboys in the SNF game, winning 30-24. But while you’d imagine the fans and the players to be basking in victory celebrations, there was one, the Niners’ star DE Nick Bosa found himself in some hot waters postgame. Why? Well, let’s just say he wore something that raised a few eyebrows—and might have broken a rather peculiar NFL rule.

Per the rulebook, a particular rule prohibits players from sporting personal messages in writing or illustration visible to fans or cameras on game day, unless pre-approved by the League. The rule specifically states no political messages, charitable causes, or personal statements are allowed during “pregame warm-ups, in the bench area, and during postgame interviews in the locker room or on the field.”

Well, after the win, Bosa donned a MAGA hat—yup, the Make America Great Again hat you might have seen on almost all Trump supporters—and now, the league is investigating whether it crosses a line. As of now, there’s no talk of a suspension. But a fine could be on the table. As for what rule he might have broken, it seems it was Rule 5, Article 4, Section 8. I mean, it’s not every day a postgame outfit choice leads to league scrutiny, after all.

And by now, you must have guessed that this was the rule that took issues with Steelers WR George Pickens “Eye Black Message.” Sound strict? You bet. The League isn’t big on turning game day into a platform for politics or campaigns of any kind.

There hasn’t been an official statement from the NFL yet. But all eyes are on how they handle this one. And before you start making assumptions, nope, it’s not because he was campaigning for Trump. Supporting Kamala Harris would have resulted in the same repercussions. Regardless of the candidate, this would have been an issue per the rulebook. So, what does Nick Bosa have to say on this?

Nick Bosa believes he had to do what he did!

What’s your perspective on:

Should NFL players be allowed to express political views, or is the field no place for politics?

Have an interesting take?

There’s a bit of a pattern here, isn’t there? When it comes to taking a stand, some 49ers players seem to bring a little extra to the gridiron. Remember when Colin Kaepernick used to do it within NFL rights to kneel during anthems as a form of protest? Yeah the star QB did what he had to. And Sunday night, Nick Bosa had his own moment. Guess what Bosa said about his actions?

It was the move that he “had to” make. A statement? Bosa sure thinks so. When asked about his choice, he kept it brief: “I’m not gonna talk too much about it. But I think it’s an important time.”

For those who’ve followed Bosa’s career, his support for Trump isn’t exactly new. Back in 2019, as he was gearing up to be drafted, he toned down his social media presence, knowing he might land in liberal San Francisco. “I had to,” he said at the time. Fast forward to now, with the 2024 election a week away, Bosa seems ready to voice his views, hoping his message resonates with those watching. But as you can expect, the league does not want to be a campaigning portal.

So, the NFL is reportedly looking into it. Would they enforce it if the rule applies? Hard to say, but if they do, expect debates to flare up. Some might see it as silencing players. What do you think it will be? Was Bosa within his rights to do what he did? Do drop in your takes.
