With last Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs are heading into uncharted territory. With their back-to-back losses to the Green Bay Packers and then the Bills, they already have a 2-game losing streak. The Chiefs have their next game against the New England Patriots, who are currently 3-10. If the Patriots somehow miraculously manage to win, the Chiefs will have a 3-game losing streak.

Was there a time when the Chiefs recorded such a streak? Under 2x Super Bowl MVP, Patrick Mahomes? No. But it will not be new for the Chiefs as a franchise. They were last on a 3-game losing streak in 2014 with Alex Smith as the starting QB.

In 2014, the Chiefs were 7-3 and looked like one of the most formidable teams in the league. Under QB Alex Smith, there seemed no doubt the team would make it to the playoffs. But then, within 18 days, the picture changed completely. The Chiefs lost three back-to-back games and with their wins stuck at 7, their losses went up to 6.

There were deep-set problems in both the coaching as well as the personnel. They had started the season 0-2 but had managed to undo it and emerge as a clear playoff contender. So, what went wrong during those 18 days that caused the Chiefs to tumble down the ranks in the AFC West? And how is it different to the current season?

How does the 2014 season compare with the current season?

The offensive line had allowed too many sacks, which led to an underwhelming performance by Alex Smith. Entering Week 11, they had allowed 13 sacks and 23 quarterback hits. If the offensive line was able to block pass-rushers, that would have also enabled the wideouts to see more action. The Chiefs also struggled greatly on third downs. In the three games that they had lost, their opponents were able to convert their third downs both through the air and on the ground.

The Chiefs ended that season 9-7 and stood 2nd in the AFC West. Fast forward to 2023, and they are 8-5 so far and are the leaders of the AFC West division. But still, all is not good and they can be much better. They clearly have a wide receiver problem. When they signed Mecole Hardman in November, they expected it to solve the problem. But one month later, there are still gaps. Moreover, when they let Matt Nagy take charge of the offense, the cracks began to show. Under their earlier offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy, they were 1st in both offensive yards per game and points per game but fell down to 8th and 11th position respectively under Nagy.

The upcoming game will be crucial as they endeavor not to record their first 3-game losing streak under Patrick Mahomes. Will they be successful? Only time will tell.
