There goes that dream. Those four words pretty much sum up Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ season. The cheers from Chiefs Kingdom were loud all year, until Feb 9. And honestly, the Eagles deserve all the credit. The defending champs just couldn’t keep up with Philly’s squad. Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl champ, couldn’t work his usual magic this time. Chiefs fans were hoping for a game to remember. And it will be but just not the way they were hoping for.
With the Chiefs’ three-peat hopes officially crushed, let’s take a look at some of Patrick Mahomes’ off nights -the games where he just wasn’t himself.
Patrick Mahomes’ average performances in the Super Bowl

Remember Mahomes against Tom Brady and the Bucs in 2021? That nightmare came back to life at the Caesars Superdome. The Chiefs worked all season for a shot at history, but when it mattered most, they looked helpless. Star WR DeAndre Hopkins dropped a crucial catch, two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes got picked off twice, and the team on the field didn’t look anything like the dominant squad we saw all season. This wasn’t the Chiefs everyone expected—it was a completely different team.
When it comes to Mahomes’s average performances, the Super Bowl against the Bucs takes the cake. The Chiefs got steamrolled 31–9, and it was Patrick’s first Super Bowl loss. Sure, he threw for 270 yards, but with two interceptions and zero touchdowns, it was nowhere near his usual magic. The Bucs’ defense had him scrambling all night, and honestly, nothing seemed to work. It was one of those rare nights where even Mahomes couldn’t pull off the impossible.

Patrick has had rough nights before, but this? This was on another level. The Chiefs QB hit the turf a career-high six times. Six. That’s Mahomes we’re talking about! The guy who usually turns chaos into highlight reels. The Chiefs QB put up three passing touchdowns, threw for 257 yards on 21-of-32 attempts, and yeah, he tossed two interceptions too. Most of his stats? They came in the second half when the game was already slipping away.
Tonight’s loss and other disappointing performances
The Eagles defense didn’t even have to blitz Patrick Mahomes on Sunday, not once in his 42 dropbacks. And for a QB, that’s usually a bad sign. History backs it up -Mahomes just became the sixth quarterback in Super Bowl history to face zero blitzes, and guess what? And as per ESPN stats, every single one of them lost. That’s a trend no QB wants to be part of. But sadly, the Chiefs QB is on the list now.

Adding to his disappointing performances, there was one back in 2021 that Chiefs fans would rather forget. Week 7 against the Titans was a disaster. The Chiefs’ offense, usually electric, managed just three points. Mahomes threw for 206 yards with no touchdowns, one interception, and a lost fumble. On top of that, he got sacked four times. The Titans’ defense had him on lockdown, and the game ended in a brutal 27-3 loss.
This season, Patrick Mahomes’s numbers didn’t exactly scream MVP. He threw for 3,928 yards. That’s not the guy who rewrote the rulebook on quarterback play. His 26 touchdowns put him 9th, and while that’s solid, it’s just… not him. The 29-year-old finished with a QBR of 67.6 -not bad, but not Mahomes-level magic. The Chiefs made it this far because they played as a unit, everyone stepping up when needed. But on Feb 9, that sync was off. And now, that three-peat? Just another what-could-have-been.
