Although the Jets season looks unsalvageable after their loss to the Colts in New York. They are still busy making changes in their backroom staff instead of focusing on the pitch. Since sacking their head coach, Robert Saleh, the Jets have only managed to win 1 game. And with no improvement in their results whatsoever, they have now decided to sack GM Joe Douglas in the latest cycle of changes.
Joe Douglas, who signed a six-year $3M per year contract back in 2019, was entering his final months. However, the Jets are now going for a complete overhaul. That led to the sacking of their top executive, who leaves with a record of 30-64. His time in Gang Green will be remembered for having the lowest percentage of all GMs ever in the franchise’s history. Even his decision to fire Saleh and hand Jeff Ulbrich the interim position didn’t work at all. At the time of firing Saleh, the Jets were 2-3. Now, without him, they stand at 3-8 while their hopes of making the playoffs have taken a huge hit last week.
As for Douglas, he could receive whatever amount was left on his contract. Him leaving his role in New York has led to senior advisor Phil Savage filling up until they find the right man. Just like in the case of Saleh’s sacking, owner Woody Johnson broke the news of Douglas leaving his position, “Today I informed Joe Douglas he will no longer serve as General Manager of the New York Jets. I want to thank Joe for his commitment to the Jets over the last six years and wish him and his family the best moving forward….We will begin the process to identify a new General Manager immediately.”

Well, to Douglas’ defense, he did help the Jets find gems like Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, Jermaine Johnson and Breece Hall. However, his big mistakes with QBs like Zach Wilson and, to some extent, Aaron Rodgers will surely be scrutinised. Rodgers’ signing hasn’t done him any good. The veteran QB has failed to live up to his four-time NFL MVP expectations. And his ACL tear after just 4 snaps last year left the Jets wondering if it was worth it.

Fans blame Aaron Rodgers for Joe Douglas’s firing in latest wind of changes
Douglas’ win percentage of .319 was tied with the Jaguars throughout 5 seasons. The only team that had the worst record was the Panthers (.290) within the same period. But is he the only one to be blamed for the Jets’ struggles? Since going ahead and signing Rodgers, the Jets decided to bring in his former teammates, Allen Lazard and Davante Adams, to make him comfortable on offense. Well, for the latter, they even traded their conditional third-round pick to the Raiders before the trade deadline.
So fans were quick to call out Douglas’ decision to bring six-time Pro Bowler Adams into the fold, “The Davante Adams was the worst trade of them all. The team was going nowhere, and they still traded future assets for Adams. The next GM will get a full-on mess.” There was a fan who even mocked Douglas by calling Rodgers the GM, “I thought Aaron Rodgers was the GM. My bad.”

Well, people also pointed out how the Jets haven’t got rid of Nathaniel Hackett. Hackett, who has already found himself demoted from offensive coordinator, is still in the club. But Douglas and Saleh have been shown the door, thereby exposing a possible Rodgers favoritism, “Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh got fired before Nathaniel Hackett. That should be enough to show you how much power Aaron Rodgers has with the Jets, despite statistically being 2019 Sam Darnold.” While the Jets are still not mathematically out of the playoff race. They could be heading into the offseason with a search for a new coach, offensive coordinator and general manager.
Amid such rapid changes, we can’t help but wonder whether Rodgers will be here next season. Even the veteran QB could be shown the door as the Jets set themselves for a complete overhaul next season.
