Is Landon Dickerson's return a sign of true grit or a gamble on his future health?

The emotions were high with the Philadelphia Eagles as they hosted the Washington Commanders at the Lincoln Financial Field. Landon Dickerson was giving his pre-game speech to the offensive and defensive line, and everyone was so hyped up. However, it didn’t take long for things to fall apart as soon as the game started.

Dickerson found himself in a tough spot and suffered a painful injury. In all honesty, it was hard to watch him go down. Philadelphia had the ball, and the O-Line was trying to fend off the defense. But the crossfire caught the Eagles guard. A Commanders’ player fell on his leg and Dickerson got rolled up.

From the outside, it looks like he’s suffered an ankle or knee injury, but that could change. Dickerson headed to the medical tent and was later seen walking with his trainer on the sidelines. The Eagles guard reportedly did not go to the locker room. The Dickerson is a tough guy and returned to the field on Philadelphia’s next drive.

Landon Dickerson’s contribution to the Philadelphia offense has been remarkable. The Guard was fuming after the week 4 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, you know, the same team that ended their playoff dreams last year. In the wake of the 33-16 defeat, Lane Johnson, Jordan Mailata, and Landon Dickerson had a little chat with the HC Nick Sirianni before the team headed into a bye week.

They had one goal in mind: to urge the head coach to run the ball more and make proper use of Saquon Barkley. That worked out for the better. Per ESPN research, the Eagles started running the ball about 41x more. What’s astonishing is that Philly’s designed run rate was 40% in the league (18 in the NFL) through the first four weeks. But after the bye week, the Eagles’ designed run rate of 59% (week 6) ranked highest in the NFL.

Is Landon Dickerson's return a sign of true grit or a gamble on his future health?

Have an interesting take?

So, yes, Dickerson and the O-Line do more than just block and tackle. The reason Dickerson spoke up was because “I want to f—ing win. Simple as that.”

Did Landon Dickerson have an impact on Nick Sirianni’s mind?

His drive to win games certainly did. The Eagles haven’t lost a game since the bye week and are on a 5-game win streak. The reason behind utilizing Barkley more is self-explanatory. The Eagles running back leads the league in rushing yards and yards per game, of course behind Derrick Henry. We still can’t forget that hurdle he made against Jacksonville.

Saquon Barkley deeply appreciated what Mailata, Dickerson, and Johnson said to Sirianni. He went as far as to call them the best O-Line in the league, understandably so.

“As a player and as the running back, to have the offensive line go to the coach and say this is something that we want to expand on means a lot,” Barkley said. “It shows the trust they have in me and the trust that we have in each other because you can’t do it without the guys up front. And we have the best offensive line in my opinion.”

It’s not hard to understand what it means for a guy like Landon Dickerson to go down. He has a deeper impact on the team that goes beyond blocking the defenders and protecting the quarterback. In due time, Dickerson might be able to fill in on Jason Kelce’s spot.
