Drake Maye can’t catch a break with head injuries this season. New England would be having Deja Vu’s right now watching their rookie QB against the Chargers. Well, they didn’t really get to watch him for long as Maye suffered a brutal head injury within the first quarter in Foxborough.
Yes, the game didn’t even cross 10 minutes when Maye found himself on the ground concussed. Trying to complete a third-and-4 down, Maye was trying to run on the edge. That’s when Chargers CB Cam Hart came charging at him with helmet first. Colliding with him head-on led to Maye instantly falling on the turf while losing the football. What made that play more astonishing was that the referees didn’t even throw a flag on Hart’s brutal tackle.

Well, after absorbing that unflagged hit to the head, Maye was slow in getting up on his feet. But the 22-year-old somehow managed to walk off the field to get himself checked on the blue tent. Moments later, the inevitable happened as Maye was found making his way to the locker room. Pats soon announced that he would be questionable to return because of a head injury. However, here’s the twist: Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo has some further announcements that can bring smiles back to their fans’ faces in New England.
After concussion evaluation, Jerod Mayo told NFL Network’s reporter Steve Wyche that Drake Maye had been cleared to return. While he was getting checked for a concussion, the Pats threw in backup QB Jacoby Brissett. But his stay was short-lived as Maye soon returned in the second quarter to continue leading the Patriots on Saturday. Within that small window of Maye’s injury scare, the Chargers have already taken a 10-point lead. As for Maye, the first time he got concussed this season, things were quite different from today’s clash.

Reliving Drake Maye’s first concussion back in November
Seeing Maye suffer yet another concussion on Saturday makes us think how unfortunate he is with head injuries. Well, the last time he suffered one in week 8, the Pats ended up winning that game against the Jets. While trying to complete an 18-yard scramble during the first quarter, Maye took a brutal hit on his helmet. This left him feeling wobbly, but he still didn’t leave the game right away. He ended up staying on the gridiron for the next 4 plays while taking a sack and throwing an incompletion on a third down.
However, just before the second half, Maye couldn’t continue anymore. The Patriots threw in Jacoby Brissett to steer the ship in Maye’s absence. And to everyone’s surprise, he managed to lead the Patriots to a 25-22 victory. Brissett finished his day with 15-of-24 passes for 132 yards without throwing a single TD. The only end zone score the Pats had in that game was through Maye’s 17-yard TD run in the first quarter. And two rushing TDs from Rhamondre Stevenson in the second half.

Now, the way things are moving in New England today. It doesn’t look like they will be able to pull an upset this time. As the Patriots are already 10 points behind before the second half. Although Maye has popped up with a 36-yard TD pass to DeMario Douglas to give them a fighting chance. It will probably not be enough to help them win their 4th game this season.

How can the NFL ignore such blatant hits on QBs like Drake Maye? Is player safety a joke?
