Is Douglas Coleman III's injury a major setback for the Bears' defense this season?

An injury so early in the preseason can be devastating. And that’s what seems to have happened with Bears’ Douglas Coleman III. He had to be taken off the Arrowhead Stadium on a stretcher during a preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. But what really took place?

Coleman was trying to tackle the Chiefs’ receiver, Cornell Powell, and went down as soon as he hit him. With his mouthpiece hanging out, there was no reaction from the Bears’ safety, but the agony was apparent. The incident took place on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. We don’t know the nature of his injury yet, but there’s an update on his condition.

Players from both teams took a knee while the medical staff attended to the player. Coleman’s helmet was left on while his face mask was removed. The medical staff put him in the back of a Kansas City Fire Department ambulance and got him off the field.

Coach Matt Eberflus revealed that Coleman moved his arm and gave the Bears a thumbs-up while being taken off the field. “That was really uplifting to our football team,” Eberflus said about Coleman’s reassurance.

Regardless, the Bears defeated the Chiefs, 34-21, and finished the preseason with a 4-0 record. But coming back to Coleman’s injury, could it be a concussion?

Have an interesting take?

His teammates could only hope and pray for him to get better. Coleman had his head up when he was tackling Powell after his 9-yard gain. It is speculative, but the former CFL standout might have suffered a concussion and didn’t get up after taking the hit.

Douglas Coleman III, 26, previously played in the Canadian Football League in 2022 and 2023. However, the Chicago Bears signed him to a futures contract earlier this year. That being said, he isn’t the only Bear who sustained a devastating injury.

The Chicago Bears’ preseason turns into a nightmare!

Two other Bears, Larry Borom (OT) and Nsimba Webster (WR) were also carted off the field. During the first quarter, Borom suffered an apparent leg injury during the second drive of the offense and was carted off the field. This is especially sad for Borom because he was supposed to join LT Braxton Jones and RT Darnell Wright to be the swing tackle this season.

“Ah, man. That’s a tough blow for Larry Borom, who had the edge as the Bears’ swing tackle,” ESPN’s Courtney Cronin wrote on X during the game. “Leaves the field on a cart after getting hurt on that [second-down] play with what looked like a leg injury.”

Borom was on the roster bubble with Matt Pryor and if the injury is severe, he might not make the 53-man roster and miss the whole season.

But that’s not all the injuries that the Chicago team sustained in this preseason finale against the reigning Super Bowl champions. Nsimba Webster, the Bears receiver, was also carted off after the first play of the fourth drive. Before being carted off, Webster caught three passes for 68 yards with a 44-yard highlight-worthy catch.

The Chicago Bears will open their season on September 8 against the Titans. So they cannot afford any serious injuries at this point in time.
