Can the 49ers' defense hold up without Dee Winters, or is his return crucial for their success?

While the 49ers had a 7-point lead over the Rams in Los Angeles. The game was going pretty well as the team from the Bay Area mostly dominated in all corners of the field. However, that happiness didn’t last long as Dee Winters, who was starting his first game of the season, came out with a possible re-aggravated ankle injury.

Before coming into the clash, Winters had already missed the first two games of the season while recovering from his ankle injury. Although he was inactive a few days back, the 23-year-old did manage to start against the Rams. But those snaps didn’t last long, as the 49ers LB exited early while being deemed questionable to return.

Well, this comes as a huge loss for San Fran, as they were hoping to come away with a positive result amid the injury struggles in their roster. Winters wasn’t the only player suffering from an injury this weekend. As their star TE George Kittle ended up getting downgraded to out just a day before the clash on Sunday. Although it never looked like he was going to play, as Kittle missed both Thursday and Friday practices through a hamstring injury.

Elsewhere, RB Christian McCaffrey and WR Deebo Samuel are also absent from the roster, thereby putting their offensive line in jeopardy. This means the 49ers started their match against the Rams without three of their All-Pros involved. But considering their early lead in Los Angeles, the 49ers are performing way beyond what people expected of them.

Well, these are not the only players who remain absent from the clash this weekend. DE Nick Bosa was also ruled out with a rib injury, and there was no change in his availability going into the match-up. Adding Bosa to the treatment table means the visiting team faced off against the Rams without four All-Pros in the lineup. That is Astonishing, right, considering the lead they have managed to maintain most of the game.

49ers taking on Rams without key players on their lineup

Can the 49ers' defense hold up without Dee Winters, or is his return crucial for their success?

Have an interesting take?

Although the 49ers are suffering from multiple injuries on their team, the Rams aren’t behind with their own list of injuries. Coming into this weekend, they have 14 players out, including star WRs Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua. With these many players out, neither of the teams boasts a great defensive unit.

The Rams are seemingly 3rd in the league in terms of rushing yards, with 5.5 yards per carry. At the same time, the 49ers are at 7th with 5.0 yards per carry. However, their offense could take the game upon their shoulders, considering Brandon Aiyuk and Brock Purdy fire all their cylinders in Los Angeles.

Even backup RB Jordan Mason is enjoying a great start to his season while McCaffrey remains out of the action. Well, there is also Trent Williams, who can put in those tackles whenever called upon. Seeing the way the 49ers performed in this match-up with the players they had going into the clash, it’s remarkable, to say the least. Now, all they have to do is hold onto that lead and come away with a crucial away victory against a Rams side looking lost without key players at home.
