Can the Eagles' defense hold strong without Darius Slay, or is this a major setback?

Although it may be too late for the Eagles to come back against the Buccaneers with a quarter left to play, they have since found themselves trailing by 14 points with a key injury to deal with. Adding on those miseries, the Eagles found their CB Darius Slay injured as they tried to counter a late come back away from home.

As pitch-side monitors captured, Slay was slowly leaving the field to receive medical treatment. Replacing him on the lineup was Isaiah Rodgers, whose impact might not have gone the right way in Tampa Bay. With the Eagles almost slated to lose their third game of the season, the injury to Slay might have been coming, considering the heavy tackles he endured in New Orleans.

Slay found himself injured on his right knee when he was pushed into a TV camera by Trevor Penning with 5 minutes remaining on the clock. Although Penning was penalized for a personal foul, Slay couldn’t return for the remaining minutes as he said, “He was tripping.” Well, Slay even called out the unnecessary instance of the tackle being made, “It could have been a clean play, he just made it a bad play. I do understand he has a job to do. And he was blocking for his teammates. But out of the bounds like that? All the way back there?”

The Eagles CB didn’t stop talking about the brutal tackle he faced late in the game last week. As he continued on his Big Play Slay podcast, “Y’all say the dirty hit. Big dude at 300-something pounds. I’m only about 190, and buddy is just trying to drive me out of bounds, and he keeps going.” While he spoke about the nature of that play, Slay gave us an update on the injury, “I had to get an MRI this morning. The season could have been done, but thankfully, the Lord blessed me.”

Well, this following week, the Eagles CB found himself injured again, but this time, it could be way more serious compared to last week’s tackle. Although we haven’t had an update yet, the Eagles seem to be struggling to match the Buccaneers’ intensity in Tampa Bay.

Going into the clash this week, the Eagles had three of their top offensive players absent. WR A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and right tackle Lane Johnson had to sit out, citing injury troubles. Although the Eagles thought their absence would be felt in Tampa Bay, it went way worse than they could have imagined. Playing out the first half, the Eagles found themselves 24-7 down, but a touchdown in the dying minutes helped them reduce the deficit.

Elsewhere, the Buccaneers were having a field day as Mayfield completed 12-of-13 passes with 138 passing yards during the first quarter. Jalen Hurts, who is leading the line for the Eagles, didn’t have a great start as he ended the first half with 7-0f-15 passes for 49 yards. Meanwhile, Saquon Barkley ran 22 yards on 8 carries, whose two late TDs last week in New Orleans helped the Eagles pull off a stunning win.

Considering their dismal start to the game in Tampa Bay, Parris Campbell was the only receiver to catch a pass. Even his 1-yard TD catch gave the Eagles a fighting chance going into the second half. But considering their lack of offensive players on the lineup, it doesn’t seem like they can win this week against the Buccaneers.
