Did the refs' oversight on Stroud's injury cost the Texans a fair shot at victory?

The New York Jets and the Houston Texans game was scoreless for a long time before the Texans decided to do something about it. By halftime, CJ Stroud was way ahead of Aaron Rodgers, but things changed seconds before the first half culminated.

Stroud completed 7 of his 16 passes for over 115 yards but injured himself. What really happened? And most importantly, should officials have flagged the New York Jets for roughing the passer? Dov Kleiman’s post on X gave us an idea of what happened in the play.

Kleiman posted a video of the play where Stroud got hurt. The video titled, “This is the play where CJ Stroud got hurt. The Refs missed a clear flag 🙏,” shows Stroud stepping up and getting tackled by the Jets defender, who was on the ground. A close look at the footage shows that the Jets defender kicked Stroud in the shin and he went down in pain.

The QB returned for a few seconds for a knee but hopefully, everything is fine with him. At least the Texans didn’t stay scoreless as Joe Mixon ran into the endzone with a 3-yard touchdown. But coming back to the injury, Stroud’s shin took a significant hit and when he fell, a Jets player landed on him.

The Jets defense didn’t lack since the start of the game and they put enough pressure on Stroud, who is playing without the veteran receiver Stefon Diggs. Fortunately, it didn’t get worse for the Texans because Stroud returned in the third quarter and was running at full speed. So, Stroud is fine.

But while Stroud’s injury wasn’t severe, the Texans lineman Kenyon Green saw the worst of it.

CJ Stroud down by one more crucial player

Green entered the second quarter, got injured, and was ruled out of the game. The Texans confirmed it later and informed that it was a shoulder injury. Kendrick Green filled in on him. But his injury seems really severe considering how the medical staff had to escort him out of the field.

The injury seems to have happened on a third down sack allowed while Green went against Quinnen Williams. Things get even worse for the Houston Texans because the second-year edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. also left the game with a left ankle injury.

With about 7:20 left in the first quarter, Anderson Jr sustained the injury during Breece Hall’s 12-yard run. He was on his knees in the middle of the field and was smacking the turf with his hand. He felt understandably frustrated. Later, he was trying out a few drills on the sidelines and seemed to be fine.

The Jets also lost their left guard, John Simpson, to a groin injury, and they ruled out backup offensive lineman Jake Hanson with a hamstring injury. The Texans were down bad throughout the game and something has to change. Speaking of change, check out this episode of Think Tank to know how these women are changing the league.
