Can the Steelers bounce back without Cameron Johnston, or is this a major blow to their season?

Although the Steelers won against the Falcons in their season opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. All might not be going well at the Steelers camp, as an injury in a critical position could change their plans going into the next few games. The Steelers were over the moon after they completed their upgrade at punter. With Pressley Harvin III released before the regular season, Australian punter Cameron Johnston joined the roster.

However, in his debut match against the Falcons, the punter found himself injured during an attempted punt in the final quarter. As reported by Steelers Depot, Cameron Johnston is hurt while Boswell takes on the responsibility of punting before the final whistle. To make matters worse, the 32-year-old was seen leaving on a cart with pain clearly visible on his face. It’s safe to say his day might be over, but looking at his injury, we are yet to know how serious it is.

Johnson’s day went south when he was struck by his teammate Miles Killebrew and a Falcons pass rusher. This led to him landing unnaturally on his right leg, thereby causing the injury for which he eventually had to leave the field. Although the medical staff helped him to move away from the playing field, he couldn’t put pressure on his right leg.

It was the worst possible time for Johnson to suffer this injury. And even though the Steelers’ won against the Falcons by 10-18, the Steelers HC did speak about the improvement his team needs. Speaking with the reporters post-game, Mike Tomlin added, “Man, I am just appreciative of the efforts of our guys. It was a fight. Obviously, we weren’t perfect. There’s week one, and things are particularly early.”

Even looking at Johnson’s numbers for the Texans last season, his importance to the Steelers cannot be questioned. Having finished a career-best season that saw him record 445 punts, he only missed one ever in his career. After the Steelers signed Johnson, they had to take $28 million in dead money cap.

However, it remains to be seen whether the veteran punter can come on time while helping his team in a short-handed position. Or will the Steelers have to play someone else in their next clash against the Broncos?
