Brandon Aiyuk's $120M extension—Is he the 49ers' next big star or just another overpaid player?

The San Francisco 49ers’ Super Bowl dreams might not take a back seat after all. Now that Brandon Aiyuk has been paid, Brock Purdy can breathe a sigh of relief and can prepare for the season opener against the New York Jets. Being in the $30 million a year club has put a smile on not only Aiyuk’s face but also on everyone around him.

Dov Kleiman posted the moment when Brandon Aiyuk and his agent Ryan Williams were on a call and captioned it, “Brandon Aiyuk and his agent, Ryan Williams, look very happy…$30 million per year happy 😅.” One thing is for sure, not many people might have seen the San Francisco 49ers receiver smile like that before.

Brandon Aiyuk can’t contain himself

It appears as if Ryan Williams posted a screenshot of their FaceTime conversation together on IG and both Aiyuk and Williams are sporting a huge smile after the receiver scored a 4-year $120 million deal that gives him $76 million in guarantees. The screenshot was captioned, “We worked hard for that smile @brandonaiyuk!”

Till Wednesday, Brandon Aiyuk was sitting out of the camp. Then the 49ers decided that enough was enough, and it was time for their standout receiver to come back on the field. “At some point, you’ve got to play,” 49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters on Wednesday. Many accepted the reality that Aiyuk might move to the Steelers, but the Niners saved themselves.

NFL Media suggests that the receiver will get $47 million between now and April 1, 2025. This deal has made Aiyuk the fifth-richest receiver in the league and he’s tied to Tyreek Hill in that regard. Past couple of days have been shocking since the Dallas Cowboys also paid their star receiver CeeDee Lamb and made him the second richest WR in the league in terms of AAV.

Brand Aiyuk is not the only one happy about the extension. It’s also his teammate, Deebo Samuel.

Deebo Samuel feels happy for his fellow receiver

Samuel took to Instagram and shared a memory of him and BA together. He captioned the IG Story, “Moodddd…(emoji) Kongrats Bruddah @brandonaiyuk.” This was a photo of Aiyuk and Samuel in the locker room and it shows BA holding his kid. The astonishing thing about the whole deal is that Aiyuk declined $32 million a year that the Patriots were about to pay him.

Back in 2022, Deebo Samuel was the one holding out from the training camp. In fact, he asked for a trade from the 49ers as well. Following the holdout, the Niners offered him a 3-year $75 million deal. So Aiyuk followed the same approach and succeeded as well. A couple of months ago, Samuel had some advice for BA, and looking back, it worked out perfectly.

“I know what it feels like to go through what he’s going through right now,” Samuel said on Friday. “The only thing I can do is just tell him is to keep his head up. Things are gonna work out. Just day by day, like, it’s a long process — real long, — it’s frustrating. All I can do is just tell him to keep his head up, be where his feet are, just continue to do the things he does for his communication on his end and their end, and hopefully, things just play out.”

Right now, the Niners are at an impasse with perhaps the best OT in the league, Trent Williams. Will they be able to resolve the situation?
