The complexities aren’t over for Jerry Jones’ team as of now. Although the Dallas Cowboys consist of a formidable unit comprising Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons, there is one problem common among them. And that is–the contract extensions.

As soon as the season ended for the team, billionaire owner, Jones clearly stated his vision of “all in” for the next battle of the 2024 season. However, the strategy of keeping all in seems quite perplexing and slow for the team, as an NFL insider revealed Jones’ philosophy of getting this done for the next season.

In a recent podcast episode of the Rich Eisen Show, the host was joined by a well-known NFL insider, Tom Pelissero. In the video shared on the show’s official X account, they discussed the current fragile state of the Cowboys, a team with strong Super Bowl aspirations and a roster capable of winning. Eisen highlighted that the team has a top-tier quarterback, a standout pass rusher, and a key player in CeeDee Lamb. However, according to them, there are issues, particularly with the running back position and overall roster supplementation.

Eisen, questioned the Cowboys’ financial management, noting that they have invested heavily in their drafted players but failed to strengthen their roster adequately. Pelissero brought attention to the fact that the team has not reduced Prescott’s $60 million contract with a new contract, even though they could. As the Cowboys are delaying important decisions for a long time, Pelissero noted Jerry Jones’ philosophy behind this.

He cited, “Dallas’ philosophy has been, “we don’t need to do something now, so we will wait” and it burns them in a lot of different cases. I mean they tagged Tony Pollard. He played on the tag last year. He didn’t have the best year but he was coming off a pretty severe injury and then he walked in free agency, lost a couple of pass rushers and the left tackle. That was probably time that they were willing to move on from that.

Concluding his statements, Pelissero mentioned positive feedback about the rookie class, indicating they will need to perform well for the team to succeed, especially since the Cowboys had a strong season last year. But the future of the team as a whole remains uncertain, as the contract extensions are still the talk of the town.

Which player’s contract extension is considered more important?

The Cowboys have potential long-term deals looming for Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons. Prescott and Lamb have one year left on their contracts. On the other hand, the Cowboys have signed Parsons through 2025, and they can franchise tag him in 2026. Therefore, his deal is less urgent. Surprisingly, the Cowboys are giving the 25-year-old Lamb’s contract more importance than Prescott’s due to Lamb’s stats.

Last season, Lamb had 135 catches, 1749 yards, and 12 TDs, earning First-Team All Pro Honors. Additionally, Lamb has had three consecutive Pro Bowl seasons with over 1000 receiving yards each. Therefore, it’s likely that the Cowboys would want to secure him with significant contact soon, possibly by training camp, then focus on Prescott and Parsons.

However, there is also a report by ESPN’s Todd Archer, who noted that Lamb’s price might rise if the Vikings sign Justin Jefferson first. Hence, if the Cowboys don’t want to spend extra money, they must get Lamb’s deal done soon.
