The Miami Dolphins have a new veteran addition to the team! After being released from the Atlanta Falcons, free agent Jonnu Smith has found a new home within a month. The tight end’s release was reported to be for freeing up their cap space by the Falcons. Being in need of strengthening their tight-end position, Smith becoming a free agent came at the right time for the Dolphins.
Smith would be joining the wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in the passing game, improving the offense of the Dolphins. While the tight end’s stats aren’t outstanding, his consistency and durability will be a valuable addition to the team’s roster. While the NFL Insiders had barely reported the news, Smith already got a warm welcome from Miami’s star player.

Smith was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2017 as the 10th overall pick. After spending four seasons with the Titans, he went on to play for the New England Patriots after signing a four-year contract but was traded with two years remaining in the deal to the Atlanta Falcons to save up $6.5 million in their cap space. Smith had his career-high record of 50 catches in the 2023 season, along with three touchdowns and 582 yards.
Now, Smith has joined Miami after signing a two-year deal worth $10 million, as per Adam Schefter. Dolphins’ star wide receiver is among the first to extend his welcome to the new addition to their crew. Tyreek Hill took to X to react to the news. He wrote, “We got that boy Jonnu,” with a teary-eyed emoji.

What’s next for the Dolphins’ roster?
While the Miami Dolphins showed an upgrade from 2022, there is still room for improvement. Though they have a formidable defense combo of Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill, there are still some gaps in the offense line. While Connor Williams has cemented his position as one of the best centers in the league, he is plagued by an ACL injury that puts a question mark on his position in the upcoming season.
The defense line might also need some inspection as multiple players enter free agency. The defensive tackle Christian Wilkins was expected to be franchise-tagged by the Dolphins, but that didn’t happen because of their already tight cap space. Tackle Isiah Wynn also enters free agency and his future in the team remains uncertain. With a cap space of $31.6 million, the Dolphins have to make some smart decisions to get a robust roster ready ahead of the 2024 season.
