It’s an open secret that the Chiefs won this year because of their defense. If it weren’t for them, the squad might not have even reached the Super Bowl. In the latest episode of The Pat McAfee Show, he revealed how his mind worked. And how a Chiefs that was known for its offense shined this year because of the defense.
Besides, after his 2023 performance, there have been exciting developments for him. The Chiefs also extended his contract for another year.
Steve Spagnuolo unveils defense philosophy

The show began with Spags expressing his solidarity with the victims of the shooting in KC. “As great of a day it was, it was really sad, and of course, our prayers and hearts go out to the families that were affected,” Spagnuolo said. “Just a tough way to end it. We don’t want to take away from what a special accomplishment we were trying to share it with our fans, but sad like I said, we pray for those that were affected.” J.J. Watt and Pat McAfee then went on to give props to him for his defensive playcalling in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII win.

Speaking about his defensive playcalling, he revealed what made it work. Spags said, “Our defense all knows what we have on the offensive side of the ball. I felt confident in any adjustment that we had to make all year long.”
Indeed, the current Chiefs defense is the best it’s been in years. And a majority of that credit goes to the DC.

The Kansas City Chiefs have reaffirmed their faith in Steve Spagnuolo by announcing a contract extension for him. Under Spagnuolo’s guidance, the Chiefs boasted the second-best scoring defense in the regular season of 2023. They also clinched their eighth consecutive AFC West championship. They maintained an impressive average of 17.3 points allowed per game.
Their defensive prowess was further highlighted in the postseason, where they stifled four of the league’s highest-scoring teams to an average of under 16 points per game. This stellar performance culminated in the Chiefs achieving the rare feat of securing back-to-back Super Bowl victories. Notably, the Chiefs boasted the youngest defensive team in the NFL, with an average age of 25.4 years. Their trust in Spagnuolo was epitomized by players donning T-shirts during the playoffs emblazoned with the slogan, “In Spags We Trust.”

At 64 years old, Spagnuolo brings a wealth of experience to the table. He previously served as an assistant under head coach Andy Reid for eight seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before embarking on his own coaching journey, including a tenure as the head coach of the Rams for three years. Their paths crossed again in 2019 when Spagnuolo reunited with Reid, and he played a pivotal role as the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator during their Super Bowl triumphs in 2019 and 2022.
