Did 'Wasp' cement Mahomes as the best QB in the NFL? Let's hear your thoughts!

Has Patrick Mahomes moved on from Tyreek Hill? Not quite. Yes, the Kansas City Chiefs won back-to-back Super Bowls, but the Cheetah era was different. It can’t be a coincidence that the 3x Super Bowl winner’s favorite throw of his career was to the Cheetah during the Super Bowl LIV.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens game will be the season opener this year. Ahead of the much-awaited football game, Magic Mahomes took some time and took to NFL on NBC to have a chat with former NFL QB Chris Simms. Simms asked him one of the best closing questions of the interview.

Chris Simms asked Mahomes about the favorite throw of his career. The QB couldn’t help but recall the 3 and 15 moment during the 4 quarter of Super Bowl LIV against the 49ers. Mahomes threw a 44-yard rock to Tyreek Hill and sure enough, he was able to reel it in. They call it the “Jet Chip Wasp.”

“I think my favorite play is probably Wasp, just because when we ran it in that first Super Bowl, it was hard! The D-line was getting after us & it was 3rd & 15. I knew that we had to make a play now! So, I just dropped back the same thing with Tyreek, give him a throw & he makes a play on it. It kind of sparked us to win that Super Bowl. I feel like that play sparked this run that we’ve been on,” said Patrick Mahomes.

That play is so famous that they have a whole Wikipedia page on it! “Wasp” is probably an accurate name because it might have stung like heck when the ball landed on the 49ers 21-yard line. That play came with about 7 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and the Chiefs were down 20-10.

That play changed everything going forward and here’s how.

Mahomes was under pressure, blitz was coming at him, and he had no choice but to take a couple of steps back and launch the ball. After Tyreek Hill caught the pass, it was over for the 49ers. It’s interesting to note that the Chiefs scored 21 points in the last quarter alone! They scored touchdowns on each of their three following possessions.

Another interesting thing to note is that it was their first Super Bowl win after 5 decades! Mahomes was right when he said that the play “sparked this run that we’ve been on.” Since then, the Kansas City Chiefs have been unstoppable. However, there were some problems regarding the Chiefs’ receiver room.

Mahomes hasn’t been throwing too many deep balls lately. Last year was not satisfactory at all, with Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Kadarius Toney making some major mistakes. This year too, the WR core seems to be struggling with legal troubles looming over Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown’s shoulder injury.
