The Commanders are probably walking on thin ice. The NFL trade of the 2023 season ended on Tuesday afternoon. But before the final window, Washington Commanders tried to make some surprising moves.
The Commanders are sitting third in the NFC East with a miserable 3-5 record. Before the trade deadline, the team decided to release a few significant players. This move shows the GM Josh Harris and Commanders arguably aren’t interested in making this roster a good one.

According to a report by an NFL insider, Dov Kleiman, Commanders general manager Josh Harris has traded away “top players.” In the past 24 hours, Harris has traded Chase Young, Montez Sweat, and even from his 76ers NBA team, point guard James Harden. Kleiman also described Harris’ moves as “Cleaning house.. some might say he’s doing the “Trust the Process” in WAS.” Young was traded to the San Francisco 49ers.

The Niners were expected to receive two extra third-round draft picks as compensation for losing some of their players. They are getting these picks for OT Mike McGlinchey and another for losing Ran Carthon and DeMeco Ryans. There is news that the Niners have traded one of these to the Commanders for Young. Besides him, they sent Carthon to the Tennessee Titans and Ryans to the Houston Texans. Their defensive end, Sweat, has been traded to the Chicago Bears.

The Commanders are indeed looking for ways out of the two consecutive losses. This season, the team’s biggest strength, i.e., defense, has become their biggest weakness. Even Commanders star defensive tackle Jonathan Allen admitted, “We just played like s***t. We are not a good defense right now.”
This Tuesday’s trade revealed that the Commanders are reportedly now just interested in having a team that’s good enough to make it to the playoffs accidentally. However, their recent trades of Chase Young and Montez Sweat simply explain that Josh Harris is planning to rebuild his team for a more ambitious and successful future.
