Magic Johnson is not pleased with the performance of his team, which he co-owns with Josh Harris. Following the devastating 31-19 loss to the New York Giants, he tweeted, “Wow! My Washington Commanders turned the ball over six times today and gave the Giants 24 points off turnovers.” The defeat was made even more bitter and painful by the fact that the Giants were playing not with their starting quarterback or with their backup QB, but their backup QB’s backup, Tommy DeVito.

Someone has to take the blame for the Washington Commanders’ shortcomings. Is the scapegoat going to be head coach Ron Rivera? He certainly has fallen into Harris’ crosshairs.

The Commanders’ latest defeat has put Rivera under the scanner

Dov Kleiman took to X to share that the Commanders are planning to thoroughly evaluate the performance of their HC once the season is over. As if losing to a team led by a 2nd backup QB wasn’t humiliating enough, the Giants had also lost their last 2 games with a total combined score of 79-23 and were 2-8 when they walked into the field to take on the Commanders.

The game was still within the reach of Commanders were till the last minute of the clock. They were down 24-19, and one TD could have reversed their fortunes. But it was not to be. Giants safety Isaiah Simmons recorded a pick-six off QB Sam Howell and took the score to 31-19. Trust has eroded in the coaching as they are up against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. And there are high chances that they might record another defeat.

So, will recent defeat force Harris’ hand to pull the plug on his HC and long-time friend, Ron Rivera?

Trouble for HC Ron Rivera

Rivera is one of the most respected coaches in the NFL. He has a 102-97-2 record so far and is by no means a coach to be dismissed. And the Commanders are not keen on letting him go either. The organization had stood behind their coach when he was battling cancer in 2020 and it was his debut season with them.

Harris and Rivera are also pretty close and have strong mutual respect for each other. The two can often be spotted having lengthy football conversations. When Harris took over the franchise in July, he did not seek to force his ways on the team. He decided that he would take a year to properly watch the team that he had bought and then make changes, if necessary.

If the 4-7 Commanders continue on this path and fail to make it to the playoffs, however, Harris may be forced to show him the door. The challenge before the team now is to prove that they can still make it work. And a win today against the Cowboys will strongly help Rivera’s case.
