Imagine moving on from a Super Bowl-winning head coach who delivered three consecutive playoff appearances at one time to a person with zero experience. Umm, that’s Dallas Cowboys for you. Just when the fans in Dallas were hoping for a marquee candidate like Deion Sanders or someone like Kellen Moore. Jerry Jones is probably going to bring them one of their own as next season’s head coach.

As per Cowboys reporter Clarence Hills, Dallas is expected to hire its offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, as their new head coach. Now, this move may sound exciting, but going about Schottenheimer’s resume, you will have your concerns. See, Schottenheimer hasn’t had prior experience as a head coach in the NFL. Yeah, he served almost two decades as an OC. Starting with the Jets, moving on to the Rams, then the Seahawks, and finally Dallas for the last two seasons. Maybe Jerry Jones is only finding positives in his probable new head coach.

However, Jones isn’t the only one who sees Schottenheimer as a possible success in Dallas. Bill Belichick’s UNC GM, Michael Lombardi, on Pat McAfee Show, spoke highly of Jerry Jones’ decision to hand Schottenheimer the keys, “I think Brian Schottenheimer is a really good football coach..I’m sure he’s ready to be a Head Coach, and I think he would be a great hire for the Dallas Cowboys.” Will it really be a great hire for the Cowboys, as Lombardi suggested? Like, this is a coordinator who didn’t even call plays under Mike McCarthy.

Yes, you heard that right. Whatever success or failure the Cowboys had last season. Schottenheimer didn’t really have a role to play in any of that. However, their unwillingness to renew McCarthy’s contract and hire someone unproven does raise a few eyebrows. Yeah, there was one of the top names in Lions OC Ben Johnson. But he was never really close to getting the Cowboys job. After flirting with Tom Brady’s Raiders, he went on to join the Bears as their new head coach.

See, it isn’t like the Cowboys haven’t had success with uninspiring names. Former head coach Jason Garrett was also an OC with the Cowboys back in 2007. He also ascended into the role of head coach. Garrett ended up serving 10 years as the head coach while finishing his tenure with a combined record of 87-70. Who knows? Maybe Jones is trying to find something like Garrett in Schottenheimer. But whatever that is, the fans aren’t invested one bit in Jerry Jones’ decision.

Jerry Jones gets grilled for Brian Schottenheimer’s decision

What’s your perspective on:

Is Jerry Jones risking Cowboys' future by choosing an unproven Brian Schottenheimer over seasoned candidates?

Have an interesting take?

Just think of those speculations where Jerry Jones was leaning in to hire Deion Sanders from Colorado. Maybe if he had come, his son Shedeur Sanders would have also followed. Like that could have been a dream come true for Dallas. However, none of those really happened. What happened is Jerry Jones, yet again, didn’t disappoint in making his fans angry. After Clarence Hill Jr. had just announced that the Cowboys are probably close to hiring Brian Schottenheimer, that’s when the Cowboys Nation erupted. One of them simply couldn’t believe the news, “You have to be kidding me.” I guess Jerry Jones isn’t kidding and instead is sold in Brian’s vision for next season. However, the fans aren’t, “I hate this team so much,” another one added.

There was even someone who had been already dreaming of Coach Prime’s arrival. But Jerry only left him with nightmares as for now, “Was sold on a prospective Coach Prime hire. What a letdown.” See, Schottenheimer’s time with the Jets saw them play two consecutive AFC Championship games. Then, there was his 3-year stint as OC with the Rams, during which his offense ranked no higher than 23rd in the league. His 3 years with the Seahawks saw him getting called out for conservative play-calling. And in his only season as QB coach for the Jaguars, his offense only averaged 14.9 points per game.
